Thanks for confirming what I’m seeing. The Fandango version matches what is on Blu-ray. If the DNR experts say the new transfer is still overdone, I’ll accept that, but to me it looks a bit less artificially sharpened.
My main reason for bumping this thread yesterday was to point out that there is a newer transfer of this film available. It’s on the Disney-owned Movies Anywhere app. Has anyone else looked at it? I’m no expert on DNR, but all I can say is it is very different than the Blu-ray and I think...
Picked up three movies at Fandango@Home for $5 apiece that have never been on sale at iTunes:
Hellcats of the Navy
Alvarez Kelly
The Last Posse
They are Sony releases, decent quality and are part of Movies Anywhere.
I’m watching The Longest Day to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-day. This time I thought I would forgo the Blu-ray and try the digital version I picked up for $5. The version on the Movies Anywhere app is a completely different transfer than the Blu-ray. There is more image on the sides...
I should probably also add that I currently own a LS12000 and it is by far the best PJ I've ever owned. It's super-bright and does HDR very well (by projection standards). Formerly I owned the Epson 5040 UB.
Epson specification claims:
5050UB 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (auto iris on)
LS11000 1,200,000:1 contrast ratio (auto iris on)
LS12000 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio (auto iris on)
also of interest is the brightness where the 5050UB does appear to have a slight advantage:
5050UB 2600 lumens...
LS11000 is better. Has laser light source, 4-way pixel shifting for true 4K. The only thing the 5050UB has to offer that the other one doesn't is 3D capability.
Fandango @ Home has the preorder in 4K, so I’m sure Apple will bump up to 4K too before it comes out. Yeah, I might just pull the trigger at $14.99, which is rare for me to do, and probably still cheaper than a movie ticket with refreshments…
Robert, I know you've been talking about Costner's new Western Horizon in other threads, but what do you think about the new Western The Dead Don't Hurt starring Viggo Mortensen? Do you plan to watch or purchase that? I intend to get it as soon as it comes out on digital (already has a...
Got my reply from F@H:
I suspected that I wouldn't get my money back. Oh well now I know that any title that F@H claims to be HDX which isn't HD anywhere else, is not to be trusted.
Okay, I really got burned on this. I bought Desire Under the Elms, Crosswinds, Jamaica Run, and Here Comes the Groom. All of the them are pretty much garbage. There is a reason these aren't HD on iTunes. They are SD masters which have been upconverted to HD. The jaggies are a clear sign...
All of them would lack HDR in this sale because selections are limited to HDX resolution, even though they may be available in 4K.
Generally I don’t buy Paramount titles through Vudu/FAH, because Apple/iTunes still has the potential for free 4K upgrade.
However there are 4 titles at Vudu/FAH...
Yes, except the events are not shown. The entire story is told through testimony at the court martial. It is based on Wouk’s stage play which is based on the second half of the novel (the court martial).
Oh, and also the setting is modern day instead of WWII.
