Although the company has made assertions in the past that the product was on the way – which we’ve also covered here – LG has finally introduced the world’s first rollable OLED TV at CES this week. The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R (model 65R9) has achieved this rollable function with its own in-house OLED technology, which the company says produces picture and sound quality that is “second to none.”
LG believes it has stripped away the traditional concept of a TV, focusing on the simplicity of the screen itself. Dubbed the Wallpaper TV, LG has created a display that uses a revolutionary flexible screen that allows it to roll up and roll back out when needed. The TV frees up users to allow them to “curate” their own personal space, without the constrictions inherent in finding a suitable home for a conventional flat-panel display.
The OLED panel itself is made of organic materials, and includes three different viewing options, known as “Full View”, “Line View” and “Zero View”. Full View reveals the full large-screen 16:9 extension large-screen view, while Line View is a partially unrolled setting for management of tasks not requiring the full screen, like the clock and weather updates. A Frame mode allows manipulation of photos from a smartphone or device, and Mood can create a relaxing atmosphere in the room. In Zero View, all 65 inches of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R are hidden in the base. In Zero View, you will still be able to listen to music and other audio content which are courtesy of a 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos audio setup. The unit’s design includes a brushed aluminum casing, and a quality wool speaker cover designed by Kvadrat of Denmark.
The TV includes LG’s second generation α (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor and deep learning algorithm, and voice control is achieved with Amazon Alexa, and support of Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. AirPlay 2 supports playing videos directly from Apple devices and iTunes, plus ability to listen to music and view photos. Apple HomeKit support allows control of an LG TV using the Home app or by asking Siri.
