Roy Ward Baker began his career in the British film industry, working in various capacities, including AD on The Lady Vanishes (1937).
After I’ll Never Forget You, he made the move to the Colonies for six years or so, staying with Fox for the period. He’s return to the UK, for one of his best known films, A Night to Remember.
His initial film was the odd, quirky, Don’t Bother to Knock with Richard Widmark and Marilyn Monroe, in her first starring role.
The film is peopled by some known faces — Jim Backus, Elisa Cook, Jr., Jeanne Cagney, and new one face, a 20 year-old Anne Bancroft, in her first role.
Standing out in Fox’s image harvest of this Twilight Time release, is Lucian Ballard’s (The Wild Bunch, True Grit) black & white cinematography, which is captured perfectly, with every detail intact.
Worth your time and effort, as it’s a stepping off point in Miss Monroe’s career.
