Oh, we got the furniture. ;) The fireplace is behind a sofa in another room (for now) and the ol' Sony is all hooked up where it used to be. That'll do for now, although I do want to get something to raise the receiver a few inches so I don't have to stand up from the kitchen table to aim the...
I've had a Sony STR-DN1080 AVR for several years now, and it works like a champ. However, while shopping for a new sectional, we saw a gorgeous TV credenza/bookshelf set that we just had to have (discontinued floor model; now or never). Sadly, the AV component shelf is only 6.125" high -- too...
UPDATE! I figured out the issue with my Roku resetting itself. . .we were watching a 4K movie on Disney+ and the PQ was AWFUL. After futzing with my TV settings, I thumbed through the manual for my Sony receiver. There, I discovered that each input can be set to "Normal" or "Enhanced" mode, and...
Thanks for all the tips! I should've been more specific up front: the PQ issue is mainly blocky, splotchy compression noise in dark images. The picture rarely ever stutters or glitches otherwise, and audio is fine. I've just been finding the crappy dark images more and more distracting lately.
My connection speed is fine, although I think my Roku stick might be deteriorating -- lately, it's started resetting itself to HD because "my device is capable of 4K at 30fps (not recommended)." I can manually re-set it to 4K HDR, which seems to work fine for a day or so until it resets itself...
Hi gang,
The vast majority of our streaming viewing is Netflix and HBO Max. I've been reluctant to pay extra for the 4K tiers, but the HD PQ is starting to get to me. (I have a sneaking suspicion that the streaming quality has gone down over time, although I can't actually prove that. :) ) Dark...
The Cats movie was better than the original Broadway show (which I saw in NYC around 1987). I've seen dozens of Broadway shows, and Cats was the only one where I literally dozed off. The movie was completely ridiculous, but so am I and I had very low expectations. ;)
I just hope I live long...
I think you're missing my point. I agree with you about the shows; what I'm saying is that the conversation has value for people who don't know that AitF is a socially conscious Norman Lear show or that Amos & Andy originated as a minstrel show, or even what those descriptions mean. Sunlight is...
Just as I was debating another overpriced ten-year-old disc on eBay, along comes a new restoration of Velvet Goldmine, and it even has its very own Criterion Collection rumor!
IMO this conversation has value, if for no other reason than the fact that most of the people who'll see it are too young to remember any of those shows at all. I know the Lear shows, but I'm not familiar with Amos & Andy (other than having read about it).
Having just come across the thread...
The lack of the Amadeus theatrical cut on anything other than an old flipper DVD still blows my mind. You can't even buy or stream it digitally.
Same goes for Velvet Goldmine, although it at least got a BD release that appears to have gone OOP fairly quickly, and the DVD is reasonably priced on...
I meant to post this info months ago and forgot to. . .my Streaming Stick + had the infamous audio dropout issues (especially with Atmos content) that worsened over time. Back around Black Friday, I decided to try this new one, since the box claimed that it has much-improved wifi. Lo and behold...
If 48 Hrs. were a serious film, I wouldn't have been so bothered by Nolte's "realistic language," but it's an action comedy, so I find his constant use of that word resembling the abbreviation for "Noise Reduction" really, really jarring.
Thanks, Dave! How does one update the title?
(For those wondering about the original thread title. . .let's just say I'm getting old. If you're old enough to have gotten the joke, you can guess what it was. Apologies to anyone who might have been offended by it.)
There doesn't seem to be a way for me to edit the original subject line. (I was kinda hoping to add my discovery to the original post too, but oh well.)
All I can say is that it's best not to think too hard about where my mind might have been at any given moment. ;):drum:
CONFIRMED!
The Apple TV app on the Roku Streaming Stick+ plays Ford vs. Ferrari (and Apple TV+ content) with Atmos audio! In fact, it also plays Guardians of the Galaxy in HD, which I got by entering the code from my old BD set, with the Atmos audio track. (Of course, I'd just watch that in 4K...
That's the thing -- certain movies appear to only offer 5.1 on Vudu (and, IIRC, Amazon Prime), but Atmos on Apple (and possibly other services).
Incidentally, I went to Target (conveniently located en route to Burgerfi to pick up dinner). Haven't had time to hook up anything yet, though. Stay...
Movies Anywhere has its own app? Will wonders never cease???
. . .{google google google}. . .
Samsung TVs got the Movies Anywhere app YESTERDAY. I wonder if it streams Atmos. And whether it streams Atmos for a movie like Ford vs. Ferrari.
(UPDATE: Looks like the MA app on Samsung only...
TODD!!! Are you telling me that I'm only 5 minutes and $38 away from Atmosifying my Apple and Disney content???
(I live real close to a huge Target. :dancing-banana-04: )
Yikes!!! I'm trying to keep this simple & specific:
1) Can any device other than an Apple TV box (or LG TV) play Apple content with Atmos audio?
2) If no, stop here!
3) If yes, which ones?
4) Which devices identified in step 3 can also play Disney+ content with Atmos audio?
Good lord, really??? Several comments come to mind regarding the idea of Ice Cube playing that particular character, but in the interest of thread sanity, I shall refrain from typing any of them. :)
I saw it on TV a few months ago. . .I think it was on PBS. So it might be available to stream on their streaming service.
(Oddly, I have yet to see the actual movie!)
So I have my Samsung Q9fn ARCed to my Sony STR-DN1080, and some of the TV's streaming apps work thusly:
Vudu: Content (purchased only) streams in beauteous UHD with dazzling Atmos audio.
Apple TV+: Content (Apple TV+ and Movies/iTunes purchased content) streams in beauteous UHD with very nice...
iTunes (actually Apple TV now, I think) has some advantages, as others have mentioned. However, unless it's changed recently, it only plays Atmos audio tracks through a $180 Apple TV box. I usually watch through Vudu since it has the best overall quality on my Samsung smart TV.
Movies Anywhere...
