In my experience, the less conversion steps - the better. Not to mention the audiophile grade DSP of my receiver are far superior to anything in an Apple TV.
Actually it's not since the Apple cannot pass the original DD+ bitstream to an external receiver. It's decoded to PCM and then uses Dolby MAT to pass along the Atmos object info. The other services pass the Atmos bitstream to the receiver untouched, without additional processing.
It seems like a cheat though, not using them. Just showing it in an IMAX branded cinema isn't enough. It dilutes the brand.
Usually something like a Dolby Cinema doesn't advertise/show a film as Dolby Cinema if it doesn't have Dolby EDR and Atmos.
The director and cinematographer shot with a variety of formats before deciding on what look they wanted, including 65MM 5-perf.
LIEmax (not faux-max)
Seems a lot of it is mere marketing though if they don't use actual IMAX cameras to capture footage for the films, DUNE excepted of course.
While people think of Atmos and overhead, the primary innovation is the use of objects as the basis for the soundtrack - which also extend to the main channels as well. This is also what set Atmos apart from its competitor Auro. Being able to pan a sound to any location in space and having the...
It just seems odd that people are complaining about a 4K release not including an upgraded Blu-ray.
They are trying to sell a 4K UHD disc. Did people complain when a DVD in a combo wasn't similarly upgraded on the Blu-ray + DVD packs?
Usually when the corresponding Blu-ray is upgraded, there is...
It would be a mistake to wait for a 4K set of Game of Thrones. HBO will not release any more seasons in 4K unless the current seasons they have available sell enough copies.
Someday I would love to see a transfer (4K preferably) that mimics going from 1.85 to 2.35 as it did in the cinema.
Disney did it for Enchanted and Brother Bear.
"I liked Bumblebee a lot in theaters, and will probably pick it up at some point. But I can wait and pay ~$10 for the UHD three or four Black Fridays from now."
"Ditto. Since Paramount is not releasing a 3D format anywhere, I can wait until this appears in the Walmart dump bin or BF sale."
It...
Remember, starting with "Apocalypse Now" there were 5.1 stereo surround mixes in 70MM format. "Top Gun" is a notable example, and this mix was done by Skywalker Sound. The very next year in 1989 they did a 5.1 70MM mix for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and that was also an expansive mix...
Unfortunately they re-used the same forced subtitle stream for the Blu-ray so the line "If they land we're finished" is missing and repeated as "They're landing" again.
"I loved Ant-Man and the Wasp, but this close to Black Friday, I'm not inclined to pay $22.99 for it. I'll end up with it sooner or later when that price goes down."
Hmmm. I don't remember any Marvel titles really being on special for Black Friday, and all of them pretty much are still selling...
HDR10+ isn't "royalty free" - there's a yearly membership fee.
Dolby Vision seems to be pretty much universally supported, Samsung being the big exception.
But with 4K UHD disc I've found is as close to projecting a print as you can get. Especially Sony 4K discs.
I, like you, thought standard 2K blu-ray was close enough. I was wrong.
Problem is HDR10+ is a metadata enhanced version of HDR10 - it's an upgrade from that, but not superior to Dolby Vision. It's "DV lite" as it were.
There's no "golden reference" like with Dolby Vision, which is important to keep the same levels as what was in the authoring suite.
It doesn't...
