The Blu-ray looks hideous so you would have gotten a much better picture quality with that screening. And of course it is really something else to watch such a movie with a large crowd.

That was probably a 1993 35mm re-release print. From what I heard nobody was really impressed with those prints so your impressions are pretty much in line with what others thought at the time. They did a good job though with the score which is magnificent.
