Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

What I've noticed is that on the data side you will often see some "funkiness." What I mean by that is that there could be some purple or coffee-brownish discoloration and/or swirls. Also you can have some black pin dots all over the surfaces, and in other cases patches of the disc become nearly...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Yep, I know that first hand. In fact, I have mentioned in this thread before if you can find a "Made in Mexico" sticker and the eco-friendly type case (the one with the big holes in it), then you should be ok. I still would be curious to know if any of the confirmed 2006 pressings are still...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Here's an interesting one. Around 2007 or 2008, I picked up a copies of the 1937 film The Prince and the Pauper and Splendor in the Grass from Costco. They were in snapper cases so I figured they were old stock as WB hadn't used those type of cases for several years at that point. Guess what...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

A very interesting post. Your Thin Man Collection might be from a ca. 2006-2008 repressing which would explain its defectiveness. My copy from 2005 is among the most heavily replayed DVD sets in my collection and gets several viewings a year, and I can tell you all of the discs plays perfectly...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

There are two ways that you can tell by just examining the case that you are likely dealing with a newer pressing. First, it will likely be in one of those supposedly eco-friendly cases (the ones with big chunks of plastic not present). Second, it may have a "Made in Mexico" sticker on it.

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Based upon what I've seen with others, it might be easier to list individual titles instead of box sets when emailing Sherri. In some instances, the box set is no longer in print but the included titles are available as singles. I remember one person had some issues exchanging his Mickey...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Dive Bomber, Gentleman Jim, and The Charge of the Light Brigade have all been released as DVD-MOD by Warner Archive (reissues of the earlier WHV editions) so I would email Sherri back on that issue. If necessary, point out that all three titles are available for purchase from wbshop.com. As for...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

The copyright date tells you when that particular release was initially put out. It doesn't necessarily tell when you when the disc was made. Think of it like editions of a book - first edition, second edition, etc. Still, it's very possible that your disc failure is unrelated to the overall...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I'd be curious as to when Mike purchased the disc. Remember, DVDs are re-printed periodically when there is sufficient demand. So a reprinted pre-2006 release could have been manufactured during the problem era. Case in point, I purchased a handful of WB snapper releases from Costco in 2008...

I was under the impression that all of the Flynn titles had been reissued by the Warner Archive. Annoying to say the least. Another reason why I'd like to see more of the Flynn films put out on blu-ray (The Sea Hawk is a good start though).

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Roughly from 2006 through 2009, but I will state that I haven't actually encountered a rotted 2009 release yet so the bad period may only be through 2008. The culprit in question was the Cinram replication plant in Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if any of the Cinram-produced Canadian discs are...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Was the disc a DVD-18 (double-sided, dual-layered)? Universal was using them quite a bit about a decade ago, and their quality control can be dodgy. I'm glad that Universal has opted to re-release many of those titles with single-sided discs (Ma and Pa Kettle, The Munsters, Northern Exposure, etc.).

Likewise. I actually feel more comfortable buying a Warner Archive DVD-r than the 2006-era WHV pressed equivalent.

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I don't know if this just me being paranoid or what, but when I try to purchase some of these Warner titles off of ebay, I try to find copies from areas that have low humidity (Arizona, Nevada, etc.). If higher humidity levels are to blame for these defective discs, then I'd like to hedge my...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

As far as I know, my copy of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" seems to be fine. I played it about a year ago with no issues, and the data side of the disc doesn't display any of the visual abnormalities associated with Warner disc rot. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary. Good luck in playing...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I would respond by noting that that the titles are individually available through the WAC and as such an exchange is still very much possible. I wouldn't be surprised if they try the same thing when I try exchanging one of my Errol Flynn sets. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Most of my purchases were done at Costco and online at DVD Empire. I tried logging onto DVD Empire but I just learned that my old AOL email address that I used "back in the day" had been deactivated (RIP). Still, I can pretty much pin-point where most of the discs were...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Are the receipts absolutely required? After ten plus years and a few moves, I definitely don't have most if any of the receipts. How long do they expect me to keep them? How was I supposed to know a decade ago about the company's shoddy quality control?

If it makes you feel any better, all three discs of that Warner collection have rotted on me. 2006 seems to have been a banner year for disc rotting for Warner. Anyway, that collection is sitting in a pile of discs that I've been meaning to contact Sherri about - I think I'll just go ahead and...

Sorry to hear that. I just pulled out my copy and the disc played fine. I think Vol 2 is one of the easier and less expensive WDTs to replace.

I'll amend my statement to say at this point any-new-to-blu 1930s title would be welcomed on blu from WAC.

Concerning the snapper cases, I would check them if you acquired them in or after 2006. The reason being is that while they may be in the pre-2004 packaging, the discs themselves may be repressings from the defective years. I picked up snapper copies of Arsenic and Old Lace, Splendor in the...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Well, another Warners release just found itself the newest member of the "send to Sherri" club, and this one actually surprised me - The TCM Archives Garbo Silents Collection. It was released in 2005 (about a year prior to the start of the era of problem discs), but I did purchase it at Costco...

If your new residence is air conditioned, you may not need to be too concerned. Where I was living before had high humidity and no air conditioning (never really needed it because my prior residence was naturally cool). I'm now in a very low humidity climate so my discs may be breathing a sigh...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

The Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 2 set seems to be one of those titles that is especially fraught with issues. I'd be curious to know if anyone has a copy of the original pressing that still plays without issues. This all makes me wonder about the nature of these problems - is this a matter where...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I'm in my new home (which just happens to be in a much drier climate) and have started sorting through and organizing my movie collection - a perfect opportunity to get some discs ready for Sherri! :D Anyway, here is my tentative list of discs that I plan to send back for replacements within a...

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

My first Errol Flynn set from 2005 is fine ("Captain Blood", "They Died with Their Boots on", etc.). The second set, purchased in 2007, is toast (getting ready to send Sherri an email about that and other affected titles). My experience with the "Gentleman Jim" disc from that set mirrors Aunt...
