Here's another movie that I had never seen before - but own on DVD. And yet disc that wasn't even opened. Still complete with the top, bottom, and side anti-theft stickers. No less of a pain to remove 20+ years later . . .
Watched this last weekend.
Funny observation about this disc was...
The odd thing - when I looked at my copy of The Abyss (I even mentioned it in this thread ages ago) my player and tv managed to automatically change the settings to fill up the whole screen, even though The Abyss is non-anamorphic.
I may have broke this magic when I hooked my LaserDisc player...
There's a lot to unpack on your reply - thanks for all for all of that!
Seeing you mention The Ref brings back some memories. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who remembers that film and how good it was. Good stuff.

Fistful of Dollars (the only one I've seen - she's never seen any)
For a Few Dollars More
The Good the Bad The Ugly
and last night, Once Upon a Time in the West...

I do prefer 4:3 to be pillarboxed - I can't handle the stretched look of the screen. Of course, my current bluray player pillarboxes with black, whereas one of my old...
The DVD played with pillarboxing. My old bluray player would require me to change a setting to indicate playing in 4:3 rather than 16:9 as to not stretch and fill the display.
That same old player played anamorphic DVDs just fine - if it wasn't anamorphic I had to change some other setting...
In honor of our new puppy Rocinante, I gave the wonderful documentary Lost in La Mancha a spin since my wife was interested in this whole Don Quixote thing.
I hadn't watched this film in ages (probably since I originally got the DVD) but it held up. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my 4k...
