I probably woulda at least have it on, but the powers-that-be haven't felt it "worthy" of being available on a streaming platform/service that doesn't involve expensive, traditional cable/sat-like subscription -- and I haven't felt like bothering w/ the OTA digital reception thing in ages now...
Hmmm... alrighty, you're renewing my desire to see it in a theater... and I just realized I can apparently still try to see it at a Regal (and very cheaply to boot) not quite too far away tonight, so I'm gonna head out in a short bit after a very quick meal, heh... :P
Hope the sound is actually...
I've seen 9 of them in theaters as well (some multiple times). Almost saw all 10 that way, but my plans for Maestro just kept falling through, so I may just cave and see it on Netflix instead before the Oscars on Sunday just so I can finally say I've seen all of them for my 1st time ever before...
I think ultimately Joe just didn't wanna see a (family) dramedy blended into this story, which he largely expressed all along.
Agreed I'm not sure calling the Brown character or his portrayal cliched is quite apt.
Anyhoo, ultimately, seemed Joe simply wanted this to be more strictly sharp...
I didn't dig into it much (beyond the pre-80's sub-list of 8 total acting awards, including an honorary one, at that link), but just a little simple/rough math would tell you to expect something like that "less than 10%" or so if this trend is recent enough (like last 3-4 decades w/ it being...
Not actually speaking for Joe, but perhaps, he prefers films that are more original *and* polished in execution (of what's understandably intended)? That at least would seem to fit w/ such (limited) sampling/comparisons I guess...
I saw ToT yesterday... and also didn't care that much for it...
I'll probably go see that (and probably Origin finally and something else I haven't decided yet... maybe Scrambled? or Out of Darkness? or maybe Perfect Days again? as not sure I actually wanna see the Bob Marley biopic, Lisa Frankenstein, Argylle or Madame Web, heh :P) in the coming week.

Was running late for Dune re-release at Lincoln Sq IMAX, so ended up switching for Wim Wender's Perfect Days instead before catching Dune in the late show that'll start shortly.
Perfect Days was not on my radar at all, but sprung up as a good alternative for the time slot when I checked...
I don't know about more fans... but yeah, generally, I'd rather (re)watch most of Nolan's films than Cameron's. I liked Terminator and T2... but really, I don't need to watch both and would rather watch another Nolan film instead of whichever of them (as long as I get one of them). Cameron...
To which post were you replying? Wasn't too clear w/ your "^^^". At first, I thought you meant Tino's post about King Kong vs Logan's Run (for visual effects and such, not BP or any of the "bigger" awards), but sounds like your comment would probably apply more (or even only) to Jim's (and...
Atmos is not really the issue. It'll still be low bitrate lossy audio for streaming. For a film that especially benefits from good audio fidelity (for all that music), I want lossless or at least high bitrate lossy, but none of the streaming services/platforms offer that (at least for movies)...
I wanted to see it in a good theater w/ good audio instead of via NetFlix... but I may just give in and see it via NetFlix -- too bad there's no lossless or even high bitrate lossy audio via streaming as that may be best (and probably better than most any theater audio in that case).
I was...
It just doesn't sound like it would be from all I've heard. I expect it to be pretty good, but not as good as most of the others... even though it'll have the music aspect on its side for me. Of course, that's just expectation. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and love (or admire) it just...
I just finally watched Past Lives today as well... at AMC Lincoln Square -- I also watched Godzilla Minus One Minus Color beforehand, haha.
Loved it... but don't know that I'd vote for it over Oppenheimer though, if I actually had a vote. I probably would still vote for Oppy over all the...
Do those per screen avgs account for actual number of screenings/showtimes?
Seems like plenty of such may only be getting one or two screenings per day, not full days of screenings... at least at the few AMC (and probably also Regal) theaters I visit over here in NYC.

I would agree that's the likely intention anyway... but whether it actually works as intended for whomever would be another story of course.
Who knows? Maybe he even intentionally wanted this kinda debate about it (and maybe even far more explosive variations of such... since we're actually...
I'm not sure they're all actually surprised per se. They just seem to think it simply didn't work quite the way (or as well as) Glazer might've intended/wanted... just as I felt that way as well.
I don't think they (nor I) was remotely expecting anything conventional or the like at all -- and...
That's somewhat neither here nor there though.
Not like Glazer has already made a lot of films afterall... or that should somehow invalidate or substantially weaken their critique -- the NYT reviewer (at least) did also see TZOI 2x.
I would think his treatment of this particular subject matter...
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/14/movies/the-zone-of-interest-review.html
From a NYT reviewer (and not like NYT doesn't cater to the intellectual elite at all either):
"What is the point of “The Zone of Interest”? I’ve seen Jonathan Glazer’s movie twice, and each time I’ve returned to this...
No doubt a small number of people largely amongst the supposedly/self-proclaimed intellectual elite will feel that way about this film, but that's really nothing new though...
I mean, I honestly tried to approach this film in such manner myself and had to constantly remind myself the context...
Actually, Oppenheimer clearly depicted and elaborated on that issue throughout even though it didn't literally show the bombing in those cities -- that is indeed rather "reductive" to explain away what TZOI does in the name of purported "art" and "intellectual" work me thinks. TZOI does not...
Filmmaker intent is one thing... but the actual effect of the film is another though.
I don't necessarily have an issue w/ artful, intellectual, experimental films of this sort, but doesn't mean this particular instance is good or helpful, instead of detrimental, etc... even in the purported...
I hope it indeed has its purported/claimed effect as you also seem to believe, but... personally, I get the feeling it might actually have the opposite effect on people (of undermining the seriousness of the whole thing) instead... which is certainly becoming an apparently alarming situation w/...
Personally, I didn't actually find it that heavy. Don't really care to see it again. I'm actually tempted to call it (and maybe all the critical acclaim) pretentious more than truly brilliant or artistically good. Tempted at the moment anyway, LOL. ;) :P
The idea (and some aspects of its...
I had meant to see a couple of those, but never got around to them yet.
I was aware enough that TZoI would be detached/dispassionate, so I went in understanding a fair bit what I was going to see, but it still just didn't really work that well for me. I don't have a problem w/ what he was...
As much as I do like Godzilla Minus One, not surprising at all though... And The Shape of Water wasn't quite the same kind of movie and was probably far more relatable to western audiences (and definitely more in line w/ how the Academy seems to choose for such awards) me thinks...

I'd agree w/ much of your post, except this. I really don't think Barbie was that good... and where it fell short was almost certainly Gerwig's responsibility me thinks -- I wanted it to be better... and was maybe too psyched up about what Gerwig was (supposedly) trying to do, but she...
Sandra Hüller was definitely better (even though I'm not quite a fan of Anatomy of a Fall)... plus maybe the Academy wanted her to get at least one nom anyway between AoaF and The Zone of Interest.
And personally, I felt AoaF was better executed than Barbie given their goals.
