I always tend to blame the Brits and the God Botherer. British company TVS bought MTM first in 1988, then sold it to Pat Robertson in 1993, and he sold it to Fox in 1997. Now, TVS was a TV network, so they might have kept things decently, but when I hear the name "Pat Robertson", nothing good...
Supposedly.
They took advantage of a loophole that was mostly used for videotaped variety shows and the like. Who knew it would be a major pain in the ass 30 years down the road?
There was one rare occurrence, at the end of the episode where Mr. Carlson's wife finds out she's pregnant, where the replacement was a better choice, IMO.
IIRC, the original song was "Thank Heaven For Little Girls", while the replacement was a cover of "We've Only Just Begun".
Purists will...
Not even that.
Why not drop in a song that was already cleared for use on the set? Then you'd have to really know your episodes to dope it out.
But, Shout was working under a budget, and did a damn good job either way. A handful of off kilter moments in each season isn't bad considering the...
Since I have some time before Quantum Leap on Blu arrives, I decided to do just that.
I'm through S1 so far, and far removed from the scrutinization of the first watchthrough, I noticed only two obvious music replacements in the whole season... in the first part of Johnny moving to LA, and the...
Jennifer and the Will...
What the hell happened to the master tape for this episode? Did they have to source this episode from a syndication master or something? It's blurry, faded... it looks bad.
Good episode, though.
The only replacement that really stood out for me in that episode was the replacement for Le Freak. Not because it was bad or anything, but because disco music is so generic, it fit perfectly even though I knew it was a replacement.
Though I do get what you're saying about the music blaring in...
I haven't noticed the replacement music drowning out the dialog.
In fact, there's a weird effect in the episode where Herb is a drunk where you have replacement music, then you hear Jive Talkin' when Herb and Craig T. Nelson speak, then back to replacement, and back and forth and back and forth...
Well, it is.There are legions of people dedicated to preserving films. These very forums include posts from a noted film preservationist. But no one seems to give a damn about the preservation of old TV. I mean, if Citizen Kane was released with two minutes missing, people would go nuts. With old...
Going by what Wiki has for the '81-82 schedule, WKRP was on Wednesday nights at 8:30 through the fall, right before the Wednesday night movie. Was there a network newsbreak at 8:58 at that time? If so, that could account for the shorter episodes for the first half of the season.
Made it to S3. Nice to see everyone made the opening credits. I also notice that they sped up the closing theme for Airplane Show.
Real Families:
Well, mailroom guy is back. I know that was supposed to be Johnny Olson. The theme music must have been the sticking point. Replacement guy just...
Venus Rising
WREQ presents a glimpse into the sad, ultimate fate of radio... 14 salesmen and no DJs, with music programmed from a central hub thousands of miles away and beamed out to a computer.
I'm surprised that was already happening in 1980.
I remember thinking the same thing... it seemed early to be going there. But it was a good episode.
Anyway, just finished watching Sparky. That Venus overdub at the beginning of Sparky's show may have been the worst overdub in the history of overdubs. I could forgive MTM/Fox whoever if there...
Patter of Little Feet...
IMO, the replacement of Chevalier with the Carpenters cover still works within the context of the episode. With all the talk of age and doing a better job than was done with Arthur Jr. and all that, it still works with "We've Only Just Begun"... as does Venus's horror...
I know we're analyzing this like the Zapruder film, but I you watch his mouth and listen to the audio, it's obvious he didn't say "gay" live at the taping.
Heirs of Waters and Gilmour, maybe.
I expect the Beatles catalog will be a bit more obtainable after McCartney gets his rights back in a few years.
Anyway, made it through Baseball. Another appearance by Producer/Writer Bill Dial as Bucky Dornster. I only knew of him as one of the few voices...
Assuming Shout used the original broadcast masters, this edit was seemingly done to the original, not a syndication master. And, since that's Frank Bonner's voice and not a soundalike, odds are it was done during the original run. So maybe "homo" was used in the original broadcast and changed...
From Wiki, to clear up the Trek question...
In addition to the standard Star Trek themes used in many episodes, this episode has some original music by Fred Steiner. Originally, this episode used music from the popular 1931 song "Goodnight, Sweetheart". This music was included, unaltered, in...
Well, at least they didn't reach the Clerks: Animated level of having a clip show as episode 2. But it was close.
Anyway, Jennifer's Date... earlier releases either cut or altered the Hot Blooded scene? That would have been good reason to take up pitchforks and torches. Hilarious scene.
IMO, that is Frank Bonner's voice doing the dubbing. So it would have had to have been dubbed at some point during the original run, no?
/set arrived in the mail. Just finished Les on a Ledge. Remembered this conversation.
Yeah, I've got Bilko coming from Canada (with any luck) next week, Batman is out in two weeks, The Jeffersons, Mr. Ed, and the early shipping Facts of Life to carry me through December.Shout really decided to load up the last couple months of the year.
My set has shipped, should be in my hands tomorrow.I think the only time I saw WKRP wan on Nick at Nite, and was always hoping a passable DVD set would be released. Fox failed in '07, but Shout's attempt looks like it's going to be good.
