  1. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Season 5 of Rockford. We got an episode written by David Chase about a mobster named Tony whose Ma authorized a hit on him. I think I've seen this before. And the next episode with the bikers... certainly "run a train" doesn't mean the same thing in 1978 as it does in 2022... they don't have...

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Since we're all on old Universal action show kicks, I'm still making my way through Rockford. Season 2 had a two car chase per episode minimum. I happen to love watching old Detroit steel land yachts doing things they probably shouldn't, so that's fun. By season 3, Rockford really should be...
  3. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Switched to The Rockford Files. Never seen it before, but had the Blu set hanging around. Looks great in HD, even from Mill Creek. And the show is scratching an itch I didn't know I had. Good, solid, episodic TV.
  4. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

I decided to finish out the year with The Simpsons. Started with the Tracy Ullman shorts and grabbed them off YouTube, then on to the seasons. On S3 right now. Last time I watched the show I didn't make it very far into season 10, so we'll see if the Mike Scully era ends my rewatch again this...
  5. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Started watching Remember WENN, the unloved redheaded stepchild of the former American Movie Classics, which has popped up on AMC+. So, time to watch a show I didn't watch when it was new because it probably wasn't something a 13-year-old would've dug, but 25 years later it's definitely...
  6. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

If you're a Mama's Family fan, Buzzr is in the middle of a week of Password Plus shows from early 1980 in which Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence are playing as Mama and Eunice. There's also McLean Stevenson and Joanna Gleason as their Hello Larry characters, but I'm not sure there were ever any...
  7. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Charmed, S1. So, Charmed is a good balance of classic Aaron Spelling jiggle TV with 90s girl power and decent stories. We haven't quite reached the years where they were obviously shooting on a cold set, though. And as opposed to older shows, the ladies are more willing to flat out kick...
  8. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

After a couple of seasons of Fantasy Island, I decided to switch over to Charmed. That's nothing against Fantasy Island. It's a quite enjoyable show. But I don't think I can do 9 seasons of it (Original seven plus 1998 and 2021) in succession. No, Fantasy Island, by its very nature, makes for a...
  9. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Classic Who music hits its nadir with the Sylvester McCoy era and Keff McCulloch's horrible noodlings on what was apparently a mini-Casio synthesizer, that included the theme for those years. Paradise Towers is a much better serial with the alternate score they dug up that JN-T jettisoned for...
  10. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Fantasy Island episode 3: "Hey, is that Ed Begley, Jr? Nah, couldn't be. He wasn't in the opening credits." 40 minutes later Hm. It is Ed Begley, Jr. Guess this was from before he rated an "also starring" credit up front.
  11. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Well, it's Saturday, so what better to start watching than Fantasy Island? The Internet now provides all 7 seasons, plus 1998, so why not? It was this or Charmed, but S8 isn't quite out on Blu yet. So welcome to Fantasy Island. And I realized I chose between Aaron Spelling shows without even...
  12. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

The Indian Doctor, season 2. Found out this BBC Daytime series from about a decade ago was o Blu now through Kino, so I picked it up. Season 2, unfortunately, is about a smallpox outbreak. Masks, quarantine, vaccinations, social distancing, smug people who think they know better than...
  13. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

That's exactly what it was. Paramount saw ratings dropping (not figuring the bottom was about to drop out of syndication entirely) and wanted a known character added. So they got Worf. The creative team wasn't happy at having this and a Klingon war forced on them when they were building to a...
  14. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Rewatched The Vicar of Dibley recently, including all the post-series shorts from over the years. This is a series I wouldn't want to see a new season of, just more shorts. Too much of the main cast is gone.
  15. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Finishing up The Office, and in the penultimate episode I saw something that pisses me off every time I see it. Jim gave Pam a greatest hits DVD of their relationship. When Pam pulled the DVD out of the envelope, she did it the way everyone in every show I've ever seen does it... by grabbing...
  16. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

My impression of season 1 comes from childhood, when TNG was first in syndication during the latter half of its original run, and I always knew the less good episodes had come back around whenever Riker was clean shaven and Troi was wearing her hair in that horrible bun.
  17. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Yeah, he would've nailed both Dorothy and Hazel, but he was gentleman enough to not even suggest he do 'em both at the same time. That is class.
  18. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Finished up Frasier. Good series overall, didn't like the ending. Well, the last scene that was a perpetual cliffhanger. I don't like being blue balled after 11 seasons and 20 years with a character. Now I kind of hope that rumored Frasier revival happens so we get at least a little closure...
  19. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

If you'd found any Julie Newmars, I'd be asking for directions. Anyway, still on Frasier. They morphed into a bit of a Dramedy in the later seasons, didn't they? Still, it's a hilarious show. I'm not usually the laugh out loud type, but this show has provided many Lulz. Oh, and stick with...
  20. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

I really don't think the modern so-called Golden Age will have much staying power by virtue of what it is. What's stood the test of time so far? Self contained shows like sitcoms and shows with high rewatchability. The modern serialized stuff? You can't sit down and watch a random episode...
  21. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

At least they never had Joan Crawford appear as the babysitter.
  22. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Cheers into Frasier... I don't know if it was the show itself, or me missing Cheers, but it took about a half a season for me to get into Frasier. But by the back half of season 1, everything clicked. Back to the disc format, too, since only season 11 and possibly 10 are superior on streaming...
  23. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

I wish there were TV guide archives somewhere. I'd love to waste some time looking through them.
  24. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

I'd take a camped up Batman over the miserable, grimdark, "MY MOMMY'S DEAAAAAAADDDDDDD", always prepared, lame-ass Mary Sue they've made the character in the last 20 years.

If he'd done that, he would've lost. Burger was the Washington Generals of the legal profession.

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Toshiba and Seagate are usually about $60 for 2TB External hard drives. I've got 8 of 'em (4 and 4 backups) for various stuff. And they hook up to all the Smrt TVs directly to play the content.
  27. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Finished up Titus. The original 2002 ending was was horrifying, the 2020 ending was... well, a realistic bummer with a little glimmer of hope. After that, I attempted to start Doogie Howser MD. It's a decent show. I enjoyed the pilot. But, I didn't feel like a drama, especially since it seems...
  28. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Finished up Hot in Cleveland. It's not technically a classic, but it was a fun, oldschool sitcom with a classic cast. Then I started Titus, the 2000-2002 Fox sitcom, because I found out Titus reunited the cast last year to film a finale. Well, a proper finale, not one Fox made a finale after...
  29. The Obsolete Man

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

The first set I've watched in a couple months isn't necessarily classic as far as the show's age goes, but the cast is. Hot in Cleveland, season 1. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's a great cast and it does what a sitcom should... it makes me laugh. Also, it's interesting seeing Betty...

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Checking out the schedules at TV Tango, looks like maybe the hourlong clip show might have been to "announce" a timeslot change. The weeks before, the 9 PM hour was The Facts of Life followed by Family Ties. Then the Taxi hour week, and going forward the schedule was FoL followed by Taxi.
