    I would put back those scenes that add value to the story or characters, such as Winters telling Provine what he'd do with the money, Demarest's introduction, and the cutback to the gas station confirming that Stang and Kaplan weren't killed, plus little grace notes like Reiner and Ryder holding...

    Late to this thread, but three comments: 1) Picker, as you will note, absolutely hated the film, so anything he said about it has to be taken with several grains of salt. It likely infuriated him even more when it became an enormous hit. 2) The film was in fact re-edited by Kramer himself...
