Peter Fonda's 1971, The Hired Hand, is an interesting film from several perspectives. Probably most important is that it's an artistic western - beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond.

Produced on a low budget for Universal, it has somehow eluded a Blu-ray release - a DVD was released via Sundance Channel, thirteen years ago.

Arrow Films' new Blu-ray is a quality release. While it doesn't appear to be a new image harvest, it lifts the film to a point where no concerns are noted, and it's about time we had quality on this production.

As I said above, this is not your typical genre western. There are subtleties to the story, that are beautifully layered as the film slowly progresses.

For those who have never been exposed to The Hired Hand, you'll find the end result is more than the sum of the parts.

Couldn't be more pleased to see Arrow behind this one.
