Why does it seem that many of the DVDs of TV shows from the 70's and 80's that have originally aired on ABC-- have better picture quality when compared to the ones from shows that appeared on CBS or NBC (the ones on film--not videotape) ? ---At least at a more consistent rate.
Shows on DVD that appeared on ABC like:
TJ Hooker
Matt Houston
The Fall Guy
Dynasty
Vegas
The Love Boat
Laverne and Shirley
Hart To Hart
Fantasy Island
Taxi
The Greatest American Hero
Charlie's Angels etc.
--Look at the DVD transfers of all these shows compared to the many transfers of shows from NBC and CBS (like the Dallas and Falcon Crest transfers from CBS --or many others from NBC).The ABC shows transfers seem to look better at a more consistent rate. I don't know if they took better care of their shows. I notice that ABC seems to have a better picture quality than CBS and NBC these days. It was probably like that with the shows in the 70's and 80's also. Does any one else see this ?

Those are of the CBS family, and CBS has remastered many of their series lately (from Paramount, Aaron Spelling, and elsewhere), so that could be the reason for the stunning picture quality on those.

And Taxi.

Also, TJ Hooker and Charlie's Angels both got new HD transfers from Sony a while back, and were airing on the Universal network in tilt and scan.

What network aired which shows is meaningless. That's like comparing the players on a major league baseball team based on which high schools they went to or what states they were born in.
