My receiver (Denon AVRX3500) has left and right subwoofer outputs. I just purchased a subwoofer that has left and right inputs.

I don't really want to use a second subwoofer. Should I connect cables to both inputs from both outputs on the receiver or should I just connect one of the two channels?

The sub outputs on the receiver are not right and left specific. Just connect one cable from sub output 1 to the sub. Most subs will be marked LFE on one of the channels, use that input. If it is not marked, use the left channel.

If I turn on both channels in the receiver and keep both connected to the one subwoofer, do I gain anything, lose anything, or would that make no difference?

You gain nothing, and you create a remote possibility of degrading the bass performance. So, why risk it?
