Epson’s LS100 Ultra Short-Throw Laser Display

With the Super Bowl just around the corner, Epson is touting its latest Home Cinema LS100 Ultra Short-Throw Laser Display as a device which will offer the ‘best seat in the house for the big game’. The unit boasts a brightness capability of 4,000 lumens ‘of equal color and white brightness’, ‘an extraordinary contrast ratio’ of up to 2,500,000:1, and a Full HD (1080p) picture of up to 10 feet diagonally in a well-lit room. Using Epson’s 3LCD plus ‘innovative’ laser technology, the LS100 can be placed just inches from a wall, and delivers an immersive experience ‘at a fraction of the cost of a 120-inch traditional flat panel display’.

With ultra short-throw projectors from several manufacturers now finding their way into median price point categories, these lifestyle-friendly devices might start to take a foothold in the true home cinema space too (although we’ve yet to see affordable models with the kind of black level, HDR support and resolution that might excite more discerning palates).

With an MSRP of $2,999, Epson might have hit on a mass consumer-friendly solution for movie and sport watching in restricted spaces, and if the claimed 4,000 lumens really can deliver a bright image ‘four times the size of a 60-inch TV’, then we might be on the verge of entering into an interesting new home theater standard too. From the image below, you will see that the unit will probably not be in the running for 2018’s design awards, and is not nearly as sleek as some of its more pricey competitors, but this is certainly not the first time Epson has made a formerly prohibitive tech category affordable to the mainstream.

“The Home Cinema LS100 transforms your living room sofa into front row stadium seats, allowing you and your guests to watch the game as if you were sitting on the sidelines,” said Rodrigo Catalan, senior product manager, Projectors, Epson America. “After watching the Big Game on a bright, Full HD, 10-foot diagonal projected image with stunning color and incredible details, you’ll never want to watch football on a small flat panel TV again. And, the Home Cinema LS100 can be placed just a mere few inches in front of a wall to seamlessly fit into almost any home décor setting.”

The LS100 is currently available from Amazon, CEDIA and Magnolia, and include a two-year limited warranty, and free two-business-day exchange with its Extra Care Home Service. Full specs are available on the Epson website.
