There are no surviving original camera negatives, dup negatives or any open aperture (1.33:1) elements for INVASION. All of them were lost decades ago.

The best source surviving film elements is the 1.85:1 fine grain, which was previously cropped to 2.00:1.
So the fine grain is hard-matted to 1.85:1? What would have been the purpose of that? Wouldn't a film that was shot flat like that normally have been matted during projection? Was that Seigel's attempt to ensure that his intended composition was respected?

Might have been SOP for SuperScope films. I booked a 35mm of Vera Cruz about 11 years ago and, to my surprise, we received a hard-matted 1.85 print from MGM instead of a SuperScope version. I requested a second print as the first was pretty beat up and it was also 1.85. IIRC, the leaders were inscribed "standard version.'

There’s no purpose, as the film would have protected for 1.37. You want to avoid an optical step. A FGM from the OCN should have been 1.37, as the optical would have been to achieve 2.00

I just checked some old notes about my Vera Cruz show and it was not hard-matted to 1.85, it was full frame but the titles were off-center to the left of the screen. I ran it 1.85 as the titles all blocked into that frame correctly (very tight on the main title card) and the movie proper looked fine. The leaders were marked "Original Negative". The vintage of the two prints was 1997 and 2001.

(Sorry for derailing this thread)

Perhaps the OCN was also hard-matted to 1.85:1. Thus, no extra optical step.

Now on the run from the law after taking a bite out of an unwilling victim, Charlie begs Norman to help him get out of town with another fellow veteran, Tom (Tony King, Report to the Commissioner, The Raiders of Atlantis). Soon the ragtag team of cannibals are fighting for their lives, spreading a deadly contagion through the city before heading into the sewers for a gut-wrenching climax no one will soon forget. One of the most infamous Italian horror films of all time, Cannibal Apocalypse is presented here, unrated and uncut. Upon its release, the film was heavily censored in many countries where it played under such titles as Cannibals in the Streets and Invasion of the Flesh Hunters. Directed by cult filmmaker Antonio Margheriti (The Long Hair of Death, Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eye), Cannibal Apocalypse is not for the faint of heart or those with full stomachs!

I’ll be purchasing this release.
Will also definitely be ordering this!

Love the fascinating bit of American film studio history that Kino Lorber Insider has made us aware of with its announcement that Kino will release 2 versions of a film originally made & released in the 1940s, about the courage of Russian civilians defending their homeland from Germany's Nazi invaders. As a kid, of about age 11 or 12, in 1962 or 1963, I only saw "Armored Attack" as it was shown a couple times on a New York City TV station, or stations. Always thought it was an exciting film, and I think it played a big part in creating my lifelong fascination with movies about World War II, especially with films that were actually made during that war.

But even as a young kid I realized how films made during WW II portrayed soldiers who fought against America, or against our allies, as being particularly evil, while some new films in theaters in the early 1960s portrayed "the enemy" as at least possessing some humanity, as did the German commander in charge of the POW camp in 1963's "The Great Escape". However, during WW II there's no way that an American movie studio would have let one of its films present a German officer who seemed to have some compassion for British or American prisoners who he held.

Anyhow, I must apologize from diverging from the main point I'd wanted to make which is that IMO, Kino Lorber will perform a VALUABLE service as it makes both "North Star" & "Armored Attack" available on Blu-ray, in June. As it is likely that of my fellow film lovers who are also interested in movies set in WW II, most people who've seen one of the 2 versions of the film that Kino Lorber will soon put out on Blu-ray, have only seen the version I've seen: 1957's "Armored Attack", which evidently, cut much footage from the film first released as "Northern Star" in 1943. And as noted by Kino Lorber Insider, 1957's version also used some narration to alter the thematic thrust of the original movie so it would have a more negative slant on the Russian system of the 1940s, that I assume film studio executives felt was more in keeping with the attitudes of many millions of Americans of the 1950s, who usually didn't think of Russia as the ally of the U.S. that Russia was during WW II.

Anyway, I'm very grateful to Kino Lorber for making available both film versions of that 1943 story of Russians battling a German invasion, since a comparison of the 2 versions may also offer a fascinating look at a small part of a movie studio's history and how that history was affected by changing attitudes of many Americans.

From Umberto Lenzi, notorious director of such Euro-sleaze classics as Paranoia, Seven Blood-Stained Orchids, Spasmo, Eyeball and Cannibal Ferox comes Nightmare Beach, a shockingly gory tale of a madman in a motorcycle helmet who is taking out young co-eds all over the sparkling sands of South Florida during Spring Break. As the body count creeps up, Miami detective John Saxon (Black Christmas, A Nightmare on Elm Street) tries to keep ahead of the curve in this carnage-packed slasher gem from the maestro of macabre. Featuring a rollicking score by Goblin’s Claudio Simonetti (Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, The Heroin Busters) and co-starring the great Michael Parks (Death Wish V: The Face of Death, From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill: Vol. 1).

Some of us have been waiting on "The Lonely Man" for a long time. Thank you, Kino. Another Vista Vision western that will look good next to The Tin Star with some of the same actors in both films.
