A few words about…™ Don’t Bother to Knock — in Blu-ray

4 Stars Worth your time and effort, as it's a stepping off point in Miss Monroe's career.

Roy Ward Baker began his career in the British film industry, working in various capacities, including AD on The Lady Vanishes (1937).

After I’ll Never Forget You, he made the move to the Colonies for six years or so, staying with Fox for the period. He’s return to the UK, for one of his best known films, A Night to Remember.

His initial film was the odd, quirky, Don’t Bother to Knock with Richard Widmark and Marilyn Monroe, in her first starring role.

The film is peopled by some known faces — Jim Backus, Elisa Cook, Jr., Jeanne Cagney, and new one face, a 20 year-old Anne Bancroft, in her first role.

Standing out in Fox’s image harvest of this Twilight Time release, is Lucian Ballard’s (The Wild Bunch, True Grit) black & white cinematography, which is captured perfectly, with every detail intact.

Worth your time and effort, as it’s a stepping off point in Miss Monroe’s career.

Robert has been known in the film industry for his unmatched skill and passion in film preservation. Growing up around photography, his first home theater experience began at age ten with 16mm. Years later he was running 35 and 70mm at home.

His restoration projects have breathed new life into classic films like Lawrence of Arabia, Vertigo, My Fair Lady, Spartacus, and The Godfather series. Beyond his restoration work, he has also shared his expertise through publications, contributing to the academic discourse on film restoration. The Academy Film Archive houses the Robert A. Harris Collection, a testament to his significant contributions to film preservation.

It is a great film, but it is not her first starring role. That would be Ladies of the Chorus.

As for the bluray, quite excellent and well worth the upgrade. The A&E documentary is cut by about 45 minutes and that is a big disappointment for fans like me. This is OOP on DVD, so I cannot understand why it is not complete. Must be a copyright thing.

I still don't want to discourage anyone from getting this very well done release. Not only is it un-cropped and has better definition and film grain and no digital issues that I have seen, but it is truly one of her best acting roles and I put it firmly along side of Bus Stop and something quite different from the very talented actress.

It's quite an unusual 'noir' film and it showcases the already famous Richard Widmark with Marilyn Monroe as the psychotic babysitter (no wonder Marilyn grew to hate Fox for putting her into 'dumb blonde' roles!), and a debut appearance by Anne Bancroft, who had to wait a full decade before becoming a major star in her own right. Plus Elisha Cook, Jr. and Jim Backus in the cast makes it a most interesting thriller that should be seen!

While agree with most everything you said, I think her "dumb blonde" roles did have layers. The Seven Year Itch is a very different role from Some Like It Hot and I love her comedic talent in How to Marry a Millionaire.

The one movie besides DBTK that is criminally underrated is Niagara. She is far from a "dumb blonde" in that, and is one more instance of another dimension to her great talent.

Matter of fact, while I am gushing, I could almost argue for every role she has done no matter how small. Love Nest is yet another not so "dumb blonde" and even the sass in Monkey Business or Hometown Story is a place to take notice.

She was a hottie for sure and there were so many things that made her so unique like her deeper voice her controlling aspect, but then her softness. One of the places that one should start with what I mean is her role in Clash by Night. From one minute to the next, you never know what she will be.

Anyway, for this thread I think the light needs to shine on this fantastic release. Here is one of my favorite moments. The crazy eyes she gives when she tells the doll story! That and the windows scene makes me chill. What a shame that MM didn't live longer, because I think she would have got a meatier role in time and all she needed to do was age a little more.

Yeah, she was really creepy looking in those particular scenes.

I'm so happy to see that Don't Bother to Knock got an A+ restoration. Thank you Fox!
Now I really hope Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will get a new restoration. The old Lowry restoration on the current Bluray is so filtered that it looks like a cartoon. I also want a non-tealed version of River of no Return.

I am all for improvement but I would prefer they do more of her releases frist that haven't seen bluray at all. Then again, we should just get both. I would happily upgrade.

Gentlemen is a problem, but still better than the DVD to my eyes. Yes there is DNR, yes all grain is practically lost, yes the colors are distorted/overblown, but at least you can see examples like the face nets (whatever those are called, excuse my ignorance) and in motion it does have that technicolor feel!

River of no Return does truly suck, and I actually prefer the DVD. Can you imagine a world where Criterion got a hold of both of these. I can dream can't I! Bus Stop has that same teal push and I too can't stand it.

I think she would have made for a fantastic Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate!

That is an interesting thought considering the relation to this release. Good call!

I was doing a little research today about Don't Bother to Knock and found out that Marilyn Monroe was 25 years old during filming, but that Anne Bancroft was only 21 when they made that film. Widmark turned 37 during filming.

This leads more credibility to the Mrs. Robinson angle. With her look on Something Got to Give I truly can see it now.

Though with respect to Ann when she says "Goodbye Benjamin" with that cold look, it is hard to beat.

But when we go back to crazy Marilyn in the doll scene I truly think of Norman Bates parlor scene.

I have watched this movie so many times. So happy to have it.

Just put in the order now for this film on Twilight Time Movies site. Building up my Marilyn collection one disk at a time.
Also ordered two of TT's 2-disc Blu-ray cases for the upcoming releases of Aloha Bobby & Rose (1975) and Thank God Its Friday (1978) (neither one a TT release) since I have the previous DVDs for both films and want to retain them. Even if TGIF's DVD is as bare bones as they come.

Oh and TT did a little upgrading of their web site. Seems more dynamic.

Are there any current specials or coupon codes for the site?
