Apple releases $5k pro display with 6K resolution

Apple has introduced the Apple Pro Display XDR (MSRP $4,999), what the company claims to be the world’s “best” pro display. The new panel has a 32-inch Retina 6K display with P3 colour space, 10-bit color, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and wide viewing angle.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said, “With Retina 6K resolution, gorgeous color, extreme brightness and contrast ratio, and a highly functional design, Pro Display XDR delivers the most comprehensive set of features ever offered on any display at this price point.”

The 32-inch LCD panel provides 6016 x 3384 (6K) resolution – more than 20 million pixels – and Apple says this accounts for an almost 40% increase over equivalent Retina 5K displays. The P3 gamut achieves over a billion colors, making the monitor suitable for video and photo editing, 3D animation or color grading. The inbuilt Polarizer technology allows for a wide off-axis viewing angle, and an anti-reflective coating reduces glare and distraction in a work environment.

The panel’s direct backlighting system can produce 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness “indefinitely” and 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and the 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio promises to deliver “super dark blacks.” An optional Pro Stand ($999) includes a neatly-fashioned arm that counterbalances the display so it should feel “weightless,” and promotes easy placement, both in landscape and portrait modes.

An additional VESA Mount Adapter is available for $199. The new monitor will be available to order in the fall, and additional specs and configure-to-order options and accessories are available here.
