I saw a shortened version shortly after I arrived in the US in 1979. The whole opening scenes were gone and the film started with the arrival of Tim O'Leary and the murder of the policeman. Surely the negative footage has not been removed and survives?
It is usually common for music to be recorded multi-track (with exceptions which Mr. Harris mentioned) and this is no indication that the final will be stereo as it is just for the benefit of the dubbing mixers to have latitude in the balancing of the final mix. This is no doubt old news to most...
Do we know if the LP used the original tracks? If not, it is possible a mono session was done for the LP, as mono LP's were the norm in late '58, and a stereo version was produced from the mono LP master.
No. The German blu ray, which I purchased, used the mono isolated score from the Laserdisc and possibly the English composite mono track.
I had nothing to do with the German disc, the laserdisc tracks must have been accessed through MGM or Amazon.
