Picked this one up after following all the reviews, since I still had the original DVD & figured it had to be a sizable improvement, and it was only $10. It is most definitely a pretty big step up from the old DVD. Unfortunately, it's also in the lower tier of the worst BRs I've seen. Too bad...
I've seen it twice now, and my general impressions are very favorable. As with any source material that you're very fond of, any alterations will disappoint you, and you need to somewhat divorce yourself from the book. Technically, it's a much better film, especially cinematography. CGI is...
Yeah, I have the LD, too. It looks like P&S to me, though; the framing looks all wrong to me. I noticed the credits are anamorphically squeezed, so that they display properly on my 16x9's display. Unfortunately it doesn't stay that way throughout the whole movie!
I was looking through various website's release lists, and found this one listed for July, but with no information whatsoever about the movie. Is this the 1985 movie with Hackman and Matt Dillon? It's always been a favorite of mine...
No, no vertical banding issues. It sure sounds like setup/source problems to me- the color issues are a dead giveaway, as this is wrong, too. Be careful about judging PJs from a dealer visit. Rarely are they set up anywhere near optimum, or even acceptable.
I think you'll be very happy;) Make sure you feed it a good source; when you blow up an image that large the Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO)motto really applies!
There are a few questions you can ask yourself that will help you decide: 1: Can I have virtually complete light control? 2: Will I use it mainly as a movie theater? Or will it be used like a TV, on all the time, channel surfing? 3: How big an image can I throw? If you can control...
This is a fun thread! I was a LD guy, and I remember the threads on the original HTF, some of which were quite heated, about whether DVD would supplant LD or not. I was very interested but skeptical about the format's possibilities. After all, it was only 80 or so more lines of resolution-...
Wait a little while longer- there's a whole crop of DVI equipped players coming out this spring/summer. Hopefully, at least some of them will fix the problems of the current models.
1000 lumens is most likely very optimistic; it could be anywhere from a half to a third of that after calibration. For instance, my "1000" lumen BenQ 8700 is in the mid 400s when calibrated. This is very common for the numbers to be nowhere near realistic. They are usually rated at a very...
I recently bought a 8700, replaced a HS10 with it. While the +/-$3k units offer tremendous bang for the buck, there's no picture-quality category I can think of where the 8700 doesn't beat it. That said, there are plenty of people I wouldn't recommend it to, simply because they aren't as...
I personally wouldn't buy a PJ that doesn't have a DVI input with HDCP/HDMI; you'll need it in the near future, if not right now. As for the Faroudja, it's nice for analog interlaced inputs (satellite feed, cable box, LD player), but you wouldn't really need it if you get/have a top quality...
There's no guarantee a 480p image will look better on your display than 480i; it simply depends on which unit (player or display) does a better job of deinterlacing. If the display has excellent processing, it probably won't look any better using 480p, especially if you're using a cheap prog DVD...
Alan, I just installed a region-free kit in a XP30, and it works quite nicely. PAL output when a PAL disc is played. Interlaced only in PAL mode, though.
1.85 flat simply means that it is shot on a normal 35mm film (not Super35), using conventional lenses. The image is exposed onto the film exactly as you would see it, no optical distortions ala anamorphic- thus it is shot "flat". Don't ask me why, probably some cameraman said it that way once &...
One of the major technical reasons for the use of Super35 for wide aspect films is the lack of optical distortion. Anamorphic lenses distort objects that are out of focus; watch a background of an anamorphic film for round objects, like a light or the moon, etc. As the focal depth changes, the...
Hmm, interesting discussion. I like the idea of Malcolm McDowell as Crouch; I also think Terrence Stamp would be excellent in that role; he has that imperious screen presence. Eric Idle as Bagman? The right personality, but I don't think he has the girth needed- how about Terry Jones instead...
My understanding of Super35's current popularity is it lacks the optical distortions of anamorphic lenses. These optical issues raise havoc when adding CGI effects ala Harry Potter, LOTR, etc. You'd have to duplicate these effects in the digital domain, substantially increasing the difficulty of...
It looks pretty good to me; while I doubt the interviews are going to contain anything earth-shattering, as long as the deleted scenes are easily accessible, and the transfer's at least as good as PS/SS, I'll be very happy with the disc(s)...
I think there's quite a few here who want this released, myself included. I bought the WS LD years ago, so I can enjoy it whenever I want (that was mean-spirited).
Seriously though, if it ever does get released I'd be surprised if it's not P&S-probably be considered "family" material or some...
I also have a HS10 on order from CDW. I qualify for the discount, as we buy our work PCs from them. They are also 10-15 minutes from work, so that's as local as it gets. I wanted to stay local if at all possible, if any problems arise.
They've been jacking me around on when it's coming in as...
I've always felt The Stand represents one of the best adaptations of a Steven King novel, at least in how it captures his unique verbal tapestry. Most adaptations of his work seem to lose so much of the essence of his characters; this one manages to avoid that trap, at least for the most part...
I also think Ewan McGregor would make an excellent Lupin! I've always pictured a younger Jonathan Pryce as Sirius Black- too bad he's probably too old to play the part now...although, with the heavy toll Azkaban has taken on him, perhaps his aged appearance might be appropriate after all...
The rumours about Tom Felton not being in PoA are not true- just another internet rumour.
Richard Attenborough is lobbying heavily for the role of Dumbledore; IMO he'd be a good choice. Ian McKellen would be an even better choice, but I somehow doubt he'll do it. I find it hard to believe...
