Eveey WAC Blu-ray disc has been replicated the same as WHV Blu-ray discs have been. They spoke of this often on their old podcast, specifically addressing that BD-R was a problematic format.
What a terrifc new Blu-ray WB has delivered for this film. It looks astoundingly good, and sounds amazing. Such a huge improvement from the DVD.
Warnercolor always would scream out “danger” to me, but the colors are vivid and breathtaking.
You are 100% correct.
...but when WHV tried to present theatrical shorts that were intended for 1.85 theatrical projection, the animation community went ballistic in protest
……sorry for going off topic there, so may I also add that Warner Archive’s Blu-ray of A STAR IS BORN is a stunning Technicolor miracle that is a must-have disc for anyone who seriously appreciates collecting great films in sterling presentations.
WPIX in NYC used to run most films and even syndicated series shot on film using 35mm prints.
In the latter part of the ‘70s when they got the package of Tom & Jerry cartoons, even those were 35mm.
It wasn’t always possible for them to get 35mm materials. They ran 3 Stooges, Popeye cartoons...
I like wide variety of films, but my preferences lean decidedly to films of older vintage. That being said, films like the two Costner vehicles from the '80s have their following, and on 'that other forum' there has been a constant drum beat for one of them in particular from many people.....and...
If TCM said Anne Brown sang "Remember My Forgotten Man", then they've really dropped the ball on their research. Ms. Brown was not the singer. It was Etta Motten.
It is my belief that this film never got a Stereo release and the imdb tech info is (as so often is the case) wrong. I also believe the Capitol Records album was not a true “soundtrack” album, but a re-record done at Capitol and not the M-G-M orchestra. Musicians union re-use fees were so high...
I got this last week, and was thoroughly entertained. It looks better than I have ever seen it, and sounds the same as it did in prior years…in theaters, on TV, VHS, etc. i’ve always assumed it was the aspect of production with so many location shots and ADR. It is faithful to how it always was...
Perhaps you are confusing Mary Stevens, M.D. with some other film. The new Blu-ray is complete and uncut as released, and it looks and sounds perfect. I’ve watched it twice this week, Ms. Francis is that good in it.
Actually not weird. That was not the new WAC restoration, but the old SD master with TCM’s sometimes wonky upconversion which has all sorts of compression issues. The white specks during the MGM logo were exactly what was on the old WAC DVD.
I’ve always enjoyed this film, but it was only after watching this gorgeous new Blu-ray that I realized it is far underrated on so many levels. The cast is excellent, the changes made in the screenplsy to differentiate it from THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER don’t feel forced or inappropriate. If one...
20th Century-Fox deposited many of their nitrate studio prints at UCLA decades ago. According to their inventory which is available online, UCLA has the studio's vault print of this film in their archive...
I like the film as well, and think Bogie and Eleanor Parker have good screen chemistry. My DVD looked horrible, so I look forward to the Blu-ray (which I ordered the day Amazon pre-orders went up!).
Mine arrived yesterday as well.....I never imagined I would see this film look so amazingly beautiful. The presentation is stunning. I never cared for any of the sketches, and laserdisc gave me the first opportunity to simply skip past them. The musical numbers are really astounding, and I'd...
I'm screwed, too. 4th Paramount title in a row subjected to delays and bad communication from Amazon.
I put the blame squarely on Paramount, as I know there are issues with other retailers as well, and seemingly few review copies have turned up. I can be a little bit more forgiving if it's a...
Don't forget ACROSS THE PACIFIC, too. I'm in on CHAIN LIGHTNING....I saw the new master on TCM a few weeks ago, and it was gorgeous, and I figured it had Warner Archive's fingerprints (thankfully, I'm not being literal) all over it......So happy to have it on order
Great news! I have always admired this film, and reminded of it by the lackluster recent Amazon "modern" re-telling of Marie Curie's story. The old DVD was ugly and dirty, and this upgrade is long overdue.....I think this bodes well for RANDOM HARVEST to follow in the future.
Thanks for a very fair and astute review of this little blip on the MGM musical radar. I have the old WB DVD, and enjoyed it very much for what it is. What was most impressive at the time I got that disc was the gorgeous stereo audio which was lossy on the DVD, and should sound spectacular here...
Great news about this film coming to Blu. I am assuming it will be another marvel of Technicolor from the original nitrate (if it survived the Eastman House fire), and as mentioned above, the laserdisc release had audio outtakes that didn’t make it to the DVD. Hopefully they will be included on...
