I second this one. Through the careful use of still photos and audio clips, they managed to restore the continuity of the story line even when a complete restoration of the film was impossible. Well done.
Kevin - are you talking about just controlling the ambient light in the room as a way to fix the glare problem with plasma or is there a more specific fix? I ask because I have a fair amount of daylight in the room that I can't entirely eliminate (although I don't watch much TV during the day)...
Thanks, Arthur. I just picked up the current issue of CR and noticed the Sharp Aquos 37" LCD was the only set, LCD or plasma, that received a picture rating of "excellent." That's definitely a vote in favor of the Sharp, but I've always been under the opinion that plasma was better than LCD...
Based on space constraints (39" width) I am looking at 37" flat panels. To my knowledge Panasonic is the only maker of a 37" plasma. I was ready to go for that based on more natural colors and better black levels than LCD, but since I have heard such good reviews for the new Sharp Aquos and it...
Late Spring is coming out in less than a week and Amazon still has it listed at full price. Usually we are able to pre-order at a discount this close to release. Even Deep Discount DVD has only a marginal discount. Is this the start of some new pricing policy for Criterion titles? Are they...
It's not as bad as all that. At least the physics part. The story that revolves around the Marlee Matlin character is lame and confusing, but the discussion about the interconnections between consciousness and theoretical physics is intriguing. Edit that out and place it in its rightful place in...
Acknowledging that this list might change the next time I think about it, and with apologies to Bergman, Dreyer and Truffaut for not having had the time to watch their Criterion box sets, here goes: 1. Untitled: Almost Famous the Bootleg Cut – for anyone who grew up in this era, Lester Bangs...
Thanks for the fine review, Herb. It's nice to see the DVD release of a foreign film get some well deserved exposure. I'm looking forward to both Grisbi and Casque d'or this week. -Rod
Not if it's another big Hollywood production, I'm afraid. The fact is, M. Night has been on a downward spiral since The Sixth Sense, with each subsequent film less satisfying than the previous one. By the time he began work on Signs someone had convinced him he was the next Spielberg. He lost...
Mark is absolutely right! 2004 was a stellar year for foreign releases and the fact that not a single title (except for M) made anyone's top ten list is confounding. Okay, maybe you didn't see Diary of a Country Priest, Scenes From a Marriage or I Vitelloni, but how could you miss the remarkable...
Could someone please explain the difference between the OAR version and the so-called "widescreen" release of 1967? How was the widescreen version created and how does it look? Thanks. -Rod
I never thought Godfather III was a bad movie. I thought Santino was a bad Don, rest in peace. Sophia Coppola, embarassing as she was in a couple of scenes ("No, Dad!"), although okay in others, is the least of the movie's problems. More serious than her inclusion was the omission of Robert...
I bought the new anniversary DVD at Wal-Mart yesterday and have not had a chance to view it. However, there is a screen shot comparison posted at dvdbeaver.com. Look at the shot of the players coming out of the corn field - the corn stalks, the lines on the catcher's chest protector and the...
I realize everyone has different tastes, but IMHO Bad Lt. is a film with absolutely no redeeming value. I saw it at the theater and afterwards felt like I needed to take a shower. No doubt it has a powerful performance by Keitel, but you may want to think twice before indulging in this one. Of...
I have several operas on laser disc, but none so far on DVD. In its hey day laser was a great format for opera. In addition to live performances, there are some wonderful stage productions - among them The Marriage of Figaro, La Boheme, Tosca and Zeferelli's La Traviata. Many of the DVD versions...
I happened to catch a few minutes of Tarzan and His Mate on TCM last night. Perhaps it was edited, but I didn't see anything during the "notorious nude swimming scene." -Rod
DonaldB - are there any more details about the 5/25 release of A Matter of Life and Death (aka Stairway to Heaven)? Is this a Region 1 release? Thanks.
-Rod
I'll second the mention of The Natural, one of my all time favorites. I still get chills when Roy Hobbs tells Iris, "God, I love baseball." And Fear Strikes Out ... even though Anthony Perkins throws like a girl. -Rod
According to Todd McCarthy, chief film critic of Variety, "Von Stroheim's original Greed ran at a length generally reported as 9 1/2 hours, a version that was shown only once, on January 12, 1924." Roger Ebert adds, the screening "began at 10 a.m. and continued without breaks for lunch or...
1. Almost Famous Untitled: The Bootleg Cut 2. Once Upon a Time in the West 3. Sunset Boulevard 4. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 5. The Bridge on the River Kwai 6. North By Northwest 7. La Strada 8. A Star is Born (1954) 9. Tokyo Story 10. Led Zeppelin A few thoughts ... Almost...
Among the Sight & Sound critic's poll of the top 5 movies of all time - right next to Citizen Kane, Vertigo and The Godfather - are two films that most people have never heard of ... Rules of the Game and Tokyo Story. Thankfully both are now available on DVD from Criterion. These are two...
