One I'd really like is Still Crazy (1998). A sort of rockumentary about a 70s band, Strange Fruit, that broke up & are now doing menial jobs, someone has the bright idea to get them back together, the only thing is they don't all get on very well. It's funny & quite touching at the end, with a...
Yes, I get the impression that most people who dislike it are big musical fans, I generally don’t like musicals. There’s no big dance numbers, & only one big showstopper song, Mariah, & Harve Presnell only gets this one song, even though he’s the only one in the cast who can really sing (what a...
I'd think separate releases would be a certainty for 4K. Only 1&2 for me too, but I do think the Blu-rays look damn good (such a great four film set, with excellent extras).
Ah, thanks for the info. I'd love to see an extra on the forthcoming disc (I'm assuming there will be a forthcoming disc) on how the restoration was done, but there probably won't be.
Yup, a lot of people have posted in various sites over the years that they thought the Blu-ray looked great. It just looked off to me, the lack of grayscale & those odd flesh-tones - is it true that is was made by combining the b/w separation dupes? Anyway, I'm glad that Warner had a second go...
Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits states that the included Blu-ray is from the new 4K
"Note that the new one included in this package is based on the 4K remaster—it’s not the same disc as before.".
Yep, I think we're fine with CDs. They do so much less than video discs, 80 minutes of stereo music & that's it, they probably have a huge margin for error (& 4K discs do so much! I do worry about their long term viability). I still have a number of CDs that I bought in 1984, they play fine &...
Ten colourful titles I'd really like (maybe just two this year?):
Northwest Passage (1940)
Scaramouche (1952)
The Master Of Ballantrae (1953)-Flynn looking a bit worse for wear, but he still has that twinkle
Knight's Of The Round Table (1953)
Phantom Of The Ru Morgue (1954)- I'm happy with 2D...
Yup, I agree with the others, I'm a film fan, not a tech head. Some of those early releases will get a rerelease, new transfer, maybe 4K, but most of them won't. It's a dying format*, if a favourite film is available (from anywhere), buy it. :)
*"The overall video disc market is declining by...
As I understand it both Fall & El CID were transferred from new low-contrast prints (some years ago now), & that’s just not good enough for Blu-ray. I’m thinking that any Blu-ray that pops up in any country has come from the same source, that old transfer.
I thought the old HD of this looked very nice with those thick rich colours (oil paint, certainly not watercolour or crayon). I’ll be interested in just how much better this looks.
Yeah, take no notice of me. I’m just venting my own personal frustrations over releases of films I’ve never heard of (ditto TV series) in a dying market, & thinking of all the films & better known TV series that will never get a release before it all ends. I know I’m in the minority here.
It's a mystery to me how WAC decide what to release. All those great TV series they have, & we get, Colt 45, The Alaskans & The Flash, all those great (& well known) movies still awaiting a Blu-ray release, & they release a lot of fairly obscure 39s & 40s films (not that obscure to some members...
Ha, yes I know I poked the bear with my ungrateful post :)
Friends & family think of me as the movie guy, who knows about old films, but I admit I’m a beginner compared to many here. I also admit that apart from the Hitchcock, I’ve never even heard of any of those old b/w films, & I’m way...
Well at least The Flash gives us a splash of colour in this b/w bunch. I know there's a lot of people here who are happy with this latest set of releases, but personally I think it's the worse batch for a while.
The Alaskans rang a vague bell with me, but I can’t remember ever seeing it (if I did I’ve forgotten). It seems like a very strange choice to me. I hope Warner haven’t pressed a lot of copies, they may end up sitting on quite a few.
I was a bit bored by this, hardly any racing, mostly just Ferrari & mistress & his always angry wife. Obviously I was expecting a different film, so probably my fault. It did have a lovely look.
Ha, thank you. I was wondering how they could combine a timed dupe element with an untimed original negative. This has made me even more curious as to how they have achieved an (apparently) great picture from a badly faded negative, the technology for doing this stuff must have come on in leaps...
I'd love to know more about the restoration, which I'm sure I will do in time. I just couldn't get on with the current Blu-ray, which I believe was made from from the b/w separation dupes, the original negative being faded beyond use. I'm thinking this new restoration (I think we can safely call...
I'd be astonished if there was any CRT scanners still working. All of the Rank Cintel Telecine machines I worked on for years were thrown into a skip decades ago. I think there was a bit of a shortage of 65mm gates for film scanners, but I wouldn't think that's the case now.
Ha, a reply three...
Yup, I've waited so long for this film, & I thought, well when it does arrive at least the picture & sound will be top notch with all the technical improvements over the last few years...& maybe it will be, I very much hope so, but it's only Warner Archive releases where I'm quite happy to buy...
Yes, the same thing happens to me when I click any US Amazon link, it takes me to Amazon UK. It is annoying the general lack of technical info from the BFI regarding picture & sound on this release.
I can just about remember noticing the stereo sound when I saw this in a cinema in London's...
Well the first title I thought of was The Wild Bunch, & then Where Eagles Dare, & I think they're real possibilities. Thinking about other titles that I'd have to buy day one, I'm thinking about spectacles where a new 4K transfer would really shine (not so much Ben-Hur, I'd have to buy it, but...
