I thought it was the dumbest film I had ever seen at the time, filled with a bunch of characters I didn't care about. I've seen dumber ones since. However, I did use the laserdisc when I wanted to demo my sound system to people. The opening scene has magnificent sound.
STAR!, AIRPORT, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. Also, THE MIRACLE. Not because I have any great love for it (perhaps the stupidest film ever made), but I've always wanted to see a great print in its Technirama aspect ratio and stereophonic sound.
"Wand'rin Star" is horribly "sung" (croaked) by Lee Marvin; but, surround his croaking with a superb men's chorale and outstanding orchestration, and you have a gem!
The show is a masterpiece of the Broadway stage. Easily L&L's greatest musical. The film, like so many other film versions of great Broadway shows, is just frustrating to me.
Not a worshiper at the altar of Audrey Hepburn, as most are, but I find this to be her truest acting on film, rather than getting by on just her undeniable screen presence.
While I find nothing underrated about it, I do think that much of its score is wonderful, but by completely different singers than those in the film. The songs are so well written that even Newley's Grand Canyon-wide vibrato and Harrison's talk-singing can't completely ruin them, but I find the...
Thanks for the review! This may already have been answered, elsewhere, but is the digital copy that comes with the discs, the extended version. I know the solo digital release is, but is that the same included here?
I want to like his films, but just don't. This was my favorite of them, due mostly to the design of the film. I find all his characters, unlikable. I've not purchased his other films, but am tempted to get this 4K.
