I got both the Kino and the Eureka.
I was about to sell the old Eureka blu ray when I realized that the new 4K version DOES NOT offer the option of 1.33 versions and 1.85 versions like the OG Eureka MOC blu ray set.
I'm glad I noticed. I think it's important to have both options.
Although Welles...
Has anyone done any meaningful breakdown on the quality of these 4K transfers? Odds are that Criterion would just work with the same elements. (if, indeed, they release these in the United States at some point)
Frank Tarzi of KL confirmed on the Cereal at Midnight podcast that this set is just the first set.
and the next one is being worked on and should be out in 2024.
i hope some day we find out why the commentaries could not be included. (I honestly can't imagine why.)
The reason is music licensing. The licensing rules are/were quite different for European countries then they were for the United States.
however, Universal is putting out a complete series Blu-ray in December. The UK blu ray set from Fabulous has all the original music (which was extremely...
While I love the snark- I had to comment on the last bit. The planet is actually greener than ever, with MORE trees than it had 20 years ago.

There is also a 3D steelbook from Amazon.de - and it is listed to have English subs.
If not- I can always download the subs onto a USB and sideload them with my Oppo!:P
but yes- buying 4k/3d separately is probably the better move.
That Japanese version (nice as it is) is just too pricey.
Film resolves at 4-6k. This is not imagined.

If you wanted to make the argument that 2K is enough and 4K is imperceptible from 2K- that is a worthwhile discussion. Steve Yedlin did a very interesting test on resolutions and perception that is worthwhile viewing...
Huh. Now you've got me thinking that maybe we would be better off with transfers from IPs rather than the OCNs.
The IP was finished. Using the OCN means they can "re-finish" and alter it the way they see fit.
🤔
Yes. The grain IS the image. DNR just smears grains together. There is definetely a "sweet spot" - where you you aren't smearing, but you also don't have a horde of ants crawling in white skies.
of course, I was referencing other material that do not have HD editions.
Yes, you can wait and hope... But shows like ACTION (1999), ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY, JR. (1993) NEWSRADIO (1995), THE TICK (2001), or MILLENNIUM (1996) will not be getting any streaming in HD or a Blu ray...
I'm actually taking matters into my own hands- and have been upscaling all my TV DVD sets with Topaz VEAI.
Really thrilled with the results- considering that many of these shows don't have chance in Hades of ever getting the HD treatment.
Imagine how much money they would have saved by making these blu rays.
these giant DVD box sets are ridiculous. You'd need half as many discs.
Turbine in Germany makes tv sets as "SD on Blu ray"- makes so much more sense.
obviously would be better if it was just HD Blu-rays! But at least with...
