THE TIN STAR is a good film, more personal and less muscular than Anthony Mann's color western epics, with a solid focus on characterization and theme. It's interesting to see how Mann uses the iconic Fonda, in comparison with his handling of James Stewart and Gary Cooper. Female lead Betsy...
Amazon: 3 GODFATHERS was listed for arrival today when I pre-ordered it last week. Now they have no idea when it's coming. Hopefully it'll show up within a week's time, so buyers who took their word about the original promised arrival date won't be too annoyed.
The Saturns can be a bit strange, in general... some winners are 2023 releases (INVADERS FROM MARS), some are 2022 releases (NIGHT GALLERY Season Three). It's a perplexing approach. One never knows if a favorite title was overlooked, or if it will pop up next year (GODZILLA MINUS ONE, where...
While the presumption is that the 4K cannot help but be better than a BD, it should also be noted that the increased resolution often brings with it excessive grain and other screen confetti. Some shots are actually unwatchable in 4K; these same shots may be problematic on the Blu-ray, but they...
FINDERS KEEPERS is a wacky comedy, with heart, kind of a distant relative of LARCENY INC., ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, and other crime movie farces. I saw it on NY TV's THE EARLY SHOW, when WCBS had all those U-I titles back in the '60s. I remember Eve Varden's entrance scene to be pretty hilarious...
A fine composer... The FIRST MEN score delivered Bernard Hermann-like dramatic majesty, along with endearing romantic and humorous themes. Thanks for enriching our lives, sir... RIP.
"Rocket to Mars" is indeed available on Blu-ray, in the Warner Bros. Archives release of Popeye 1940s Volume Two. As a matter of fact, Popeye fighting the Martians and their Bluto-Like leader happens to be what's depicted on the Blu-ray cover. Gorgeous quality, by the way. Great Winston...
TARZAN'S GREATEST ADVENTURE, the best Tarzan of the bunch imo, and in the view of many others, is impressive enough for a 4K UHD. Those amazing jungle vistas would be something with finer detail. And was there ever a better villain than the bloodthirsty Slade, played to sadistic perfection by...
You lose top-to-bottom but gain a sliver on the sides with 1.85. Remember, the film was designed and composed for this wider aspect ratio, so that's what the filmmakers wanted you to see. The extraneous material above and below was cut away, and that includes bloopers of telephone poles and such.
Thanks for the tip about the Italian release of KRONOS. Wade Williams' old Image DVD was letterboxed, at least; but the title, a sci-fi favorite, is in dire need of an upgrade, at least domestically.
BACK FROM THE DEAD: I'm looking forward to Kino's release of this obscure supernatural thriller. If memory serves, you can hear snatches of the INVADERS FROM MARS music score early on, as devil worshippers go hurtling over a cliff. It's been about a half century since I've seen the film, so...
Not only is the logo incorrect, the music underneath the logo is wrong, as well, getting the movie off to a completely inaccurate start. No way to defend this. Sorry!
I'm curious about what's considered an official Blu-ray release... POSSE FROM HELL, for example, was released on Blu-ray in Germany a few years back, but it's listed here as making its BD debut. Domestically, that's true, but internationally, it isn't.
SLIGHTLY SCARLET is the best Technicolor noir I can think of, but there are others. I'd say Henry Hathaway's NIAGARA, shot by Joe MacDonald, certainly qualifies (see attached frame). What's interesting is that the color in these films is not subdued, to suggest bleakness. Quite the...
Would it have killed them to restore the proper 1973 WB logo? THE EXORCIST is film history, after all, and it's important to put a challenging groundbreaker like this one in its proper social/cultural context. Not only would Saul Bass's "button" logo for WB be accurate for the era, but the...
Actually, despite all the fanciful stops along the way, there is a straight line to this narrative that holds everything together: Barbarella is on a mission to find a missing scientist who may be a threat to the "loving universe"... and is, ultimately. It's really no different than 007 being...
Interesting. But it was England's second most successful movie of the year, a big commercial hit, so go figure. By the way, when the film was re-released in 1977 to cash in on the STAR WARS craze, famed genre illustrators the Hildebrandt Brothers and Boris Vallejo were commissioned to produce...
According to Wikipedia, "The film was particularly popular in the United Kingdom, where it was the year's second-highest-grossing film, after THE JUNGLE BOOK." My memory was that BARBARELLA did good business in general, although it was considered a scandalous disgrace by many conservative...
Hopefully all the hard work we put into the COLUMBO commentaries won't have been in vain. Maybe some fan site can be created where our editorial material can be downloaded. As podcasts prove all the time, anyone is entitled to talk about movies or TV shows. Finally, if all else fails, fans...
Just curious: why no Via Vision/Imprint releases listed? I'm very proud of the five and a half hour commentary I provided for THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES mini-series, which I believe comes out next month. Also did a number of other commentaries for the Aussie company, including that wild Elizabeth...
In spite of the production problems AND the challenge of an inner monologue, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA does cast a unique spell that is curiously therapeutic for viewers, and many critics noted the "minor miracle" of the movie's success on television, where the smaller screen (and for most...
In the old 16mm days, I owned a TV syndication print of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. That meant it was 1.33 or 1.37. The image was clearly meant to be cropped into a more horizontal shape, because you could see "blooper" material on the top and bottom occasionally. I find it hard to believe...
Yes indeed, the negative is not meant to be the finished product. It requires exactly the kind of work you've outlined for the proper video presentation.
With all due respect, what you're pointing out is true in all aspects of life. The person you hire to fix your car is supposed to know what...
