I want to thank everyone in this thread who gave me so much of an education, with great suggestions and perspective. You've helped to make this theater come to life! I'm very thankful for this forum.
While the build-out isn't quite finished, we have the complete system installed and we were...
Xmas Eve is the plan! We'll see, though. LOL. By today, all the equipment should be in and wired, so we can test it. That's just the beginning, though, and temporary.
I've started a new thread to document my build adventure, which can be found HERE. First thing you might notice is that the...
I'm curious what the inaugural film will be, too! :D
Got any suggestions? We're scratching our heads. One suggestion was Die Hard, since our first movie will probably be Christmas Eve. I also suggested Avatar, in preparation for seeing the sequel. But it's hard to find 4K UHD Bluray discs that...
Damn. I never expected this.
If we build this with the screen on the shorter wall, down at the far end of this picture next to the doorway, which seems like the obvious place...
...then we get chaotic and problematic sound reflections that look like this:
We also have problems placing...
Finally added Atmos speakers. Today I ordered four RSL C34E MKII in-ceiling speakers.
And with that, my purchases are done.
For now. LOL! I can see it's an addiction. :D
Okay, you wonderfully helpful experts, I am thinking of changing screens and need your knowledge and advice!
Before we got into the project, I bought a 120" 16:9 screen from Elite Screens. But for reasons I won't bore you with we're now building a false wall, and are going to put speakers...
Now I have to wait for the puppies to reach 8 weeks old and go to their homes so I can start actually putting this project together.
Yes, the room has puppies right now.
I kinda tried to do that in one amp. In this amp the Left, Right, and Center channels are high power @ 300 watts each into 8 ohms (all channels driven), while the surrounds and atmospherics get 80 watts into 6 ohms apiece, all channels driven (my surrounds are 6 ohm speakers). According to...
@JohnRice got me thinking about alternative receiver/amp options. One of the websites he linked to has tons of BBB complaints so I dumped that, but started looking elsewhere.
I'm so overwhelmed and confused by all this -- LOL! I'm easily confused. :) -- that I got tired of researching and just...
This is a wonderful and very centering post. Thank you for it. Thanks for the perspective on my journey, and thanks for the great advice and reassurance.
I suppose the only thing pressing against the wisdom of an incremental approach is that my wonderful spouse is holding her tongue and just...
I've discovered something about building a home theater. The upselling pressure in home theater stuff is incredible. It comes from the companies, where "for just a few hundred dollars more," the next model up will give you cool stuff you're not getting now. And if you get that model, then the...
This project is starting to come together! Woohoo! Thanks so much for all the help I've received in this thread. It's invaluable. :)
Now I need your help on universal remote/controller options. I'm a 66-year old woman (profile photo posted automatically, I don't know how, and is from 15 years...
Oh, that's fantastic. Going to look on the ELAC site now. Thank you for thinking of me. :)
But what's the real performance difference between the two? Is one clearly a better choice than the other?
The fact that the UniFi v2 has a 140 watt max, 20 watts more than the Debut v2 seems like an...
I'm in the Sierra Foothills, in the sticks outside of Grass Valley, which is about an hour northeast of Sacramento, and an hour southwest of Lake Tahoe.
But I drive twice a month to the Bay Area for sashimi grade fish, as my spouse is an incredible sushi chef, having studied at the Sushi...
You guys, and especially @JohnRice, might be satisfied to know that you've all convinced me about the sealed subs, which was where I had always been before this, anyway. But I did succumb to the trope about ported subs being better for movies, until you guys brought me back.
So, even though it...
Ouch. That was unnecessary. You assume a lot. I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to hear what you had to say and learn something.
In fact, I've never had a ported sub before. Only sealed subs.
I know sealed subs are supposed to be tighter, faster, and better for music. But I won't be using my theater for music, just movies and sports. One person said the PB3000 "is like being kicked in the chest by a mule on a roid rage." LOL! Assuming that's actually a benefit of a ported...
Thank you all for such great advice and help! You've made a big difference.
Okay, after going over a million things, this is what I've tentatively decided on. Let me know if you see any red flags:
VIDEO
Projector: Epson 5050ub $2995.
Screen: Elite Screens Aeon 120" 16:9 Fixed Frame Projection...
Thanks, everyone, for some very good and helpful input. This is a process for me and I have more and more questions and decisions and things to learn as I go.
I'm gonna keep the B&W 802s, as suggested, and take them in for a tuneup (and refinishing of the cabinets).
The problem with the old...
Thanks! I wasn’t very clear about the budget. It’s for equipment, and any left over will go for building materials. I don’t expect a remodel to be within my budget. I have an electrician friend who will help, but I will likely need to hire a carpenter, which I have not budgeted for.
I'm a 66-year old woman who wants to DIY build out her basement into as good a home theater as I can get on a $10,000 budget.
I'm starting with a finished basement with the dimensions 7'4" High x 14'6"Wide x 26'6" Deep. It's 100% hard surfaces.
There are doors on every wall, which will limit...
