The issue has a lot to do with the impedance of the speakers, and it has nothing to do with the Denon, but receivers in general from all brands. The ELACs are slightly low impedance, at 6 Ohm. That really shouldn't be a problem. The Wharfdale 240s are 4 Ohm and I definitely wouldn't recommend...
