Press Release BVHE Press Release: The Abyss, True Lies, Aliens, Titanic, Avatar and Avatar: The Way of the Water (4k UHD) (Blu-ray)

Having finally had a chance to watch True Lies, I'm going to consolidate a couple of past posts made in other James Cameron threads into this one for discussion. As I mentioned in the True Lies thread last night, in no way do I believe that disc comes from a new 4K scan. It absolutely looks to...

May 16th? Ouch. Amazon informs me that my copy of True Lies is now expected March 28 - 31 and Aliens from April 1 - 7. No update on The Abyss for me yet, which means that it will probably be even later than yours.

Yeah, looks like I definitely made a mistake preordering from Amazon. I regret that now. Should have known they'd still have problems gettting Disney product on street date.

Shoot, I think you've just hit on something important here. It's pretty damn ironic for a guy who launched a major franchise of movies about the dangers posed by A.I. to suddenly rely on it to make substantive changes to his work. I suppose we should expect the inevitable 4K edition of The...

If you're aware of his reputation, why are we having this argument? Are you just intent on being a pedant? Tino was apparently unaware of Cameron's reputation. I was at work and had limited time to dig something up, so I went to Google and searched "James Cameron treatment of crew members."...

And it's somehow my fault that you've been oblivious to James Cameron's extremely notorious reputation as a megalomaniac tyrant over the last 40 years of his filmmaking career, and are incapable of Googling a better article about that yourself? Give me a break. Next thing you tell...

Forgive me, I spent all of ten seconds Googling something while I was at work. I'm sure you can find better if you try. Go look up how Ed Harris feels about him. Yup, exactly. It was very well know for a long time that he was just a monster to work for.

Most directors are assholes. :P Really, this isn't a secret. There are plenty of accounts on the web of how poorly James Cameron treats his crews. He's the kind of director who spends the entire shoot up in everybody's face, screaming at them for not doing their job up to his demanding...

Are you unfamiliar with his reputation? He's notorious for being a micro-manager and a slave-driver on set. He's also on his, what, fifth wife now. Which suggests that he doesn't exactly treat his personal relationships any better than his professional relationships. But of course my point...

The problem with this mission statement is that it fails to take into consideration that some filmmakers - James Cameron being a longstanding, very infamous example of such - are a**holes. ;)

Any time you ever hear of a movie that's only available on Blu-ray in Spain, you can know with 100% certainty that the disc is a bootleg.

Horsesh*t. The compression may filter some small amount of the grain, but not likely all of it. I'd expect the physical discs to be at best a marginal improvement, and still have next to no grain, because that's a very deliberate decision that James Cameron has made. Aliens was never even...

Press Release BVHE Press Release: The Abyss, True Lies, Aliens, Titanic, Avatar and Avatar: The Way of the Water (4k UHD) (Blu-ray)

Hearing from a friend that True Lies looks pretty much exactly like the Terminator 2 UHD that was supposedly a "mistake" - no grain at all and the actors look like they're made out of plastic. As for the difference between physical and streaming, while it certainly is possible for the extra...

Doesn't work that way. You can't restore the original color by changing a setting in your TV. All you can do is boost or (at best) reduce the intensity of the teal.

I hope you guys are right. I wasn't able to attend any of the one-day-only theatrical screenings. I was just going by the trailers that circulated earlier. And of course by every Cameron-supervised Blu-ray and 4K video master of any of his movies... well, ever.

Sure, but that's still a rationalization to justify the change. In 1989, The Abyss was not photographed with so much teal. It was blue. This is a revision. And I think we all know that James Cameron isn't making this change under any pretense of "realism." He's doing it because he f'ing loves...

How lazy is the Photoshop on the True Lies cover? Did they not tell the A.I. putting it together that Arnold only ever wears a WHITE tuxedo in the film?

The Na'vi are plenty teal. Even more so in the second movie, but they were never pure blue.

James Cameron has more than enough clout in the industry that he can get whatever he wants. Filmmakers are just people, no different than you or I. Sometimes they lose their minds and make really terrible, infuriating decisions. When they do, I don't believe they should automatically be...

Aliens Blu-ray, The Terminator Blu-ray, Titanic Blu-ray, Terminator 2 Blu-ray & 4K. All were given teal-and-orange color makeovers. He's been doing this for a long while.

The objection to teal comes down to two things. The first is the horrid stench of revisionism. James Cameron's movies during this time period were known for their "steely blue" coloring. You can see that very strongly in this old trailer for The Abyss. But these days, Cameron has decided that...

The movie was shot on Super 35 in mostly low-light conditions, a lot of it underwater. It should damn well be pretty grainy.
