As an aside, I've read two recent books by mainstream authors that have incorporated elements of the multiverse concept: Dean Koontz's "Elsewhere", and Preston & Child's "Bloodless" (a Pendergast novel).
So the idea seems to be a popular current trend across media.
Given the success of "long" films in recent years, I don't think they'll be getting shorter any time soon.
But it's a real barrier in my mind. If I'm trying to pick a movie to watch, I'll often pick the one that's 2 hours or less. Once they start going over 2 hours, it just seems like too much...
I think he's been busy producing, rather than directing of late. Sadly several of those films were remakes of varying quality (Evil Dead, Poltergeist, The Grudge), with a couple of quite good originals: Don't Breathe and Crawl. Plus the TV series Spartacus, and Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Yep, these people need to understand that they're largely director-for-hire on these sorts of films. They just need to get in, get out, and deliver the film on schedule as they were hired to do.
If they're successful at that process, that's when they can sometimes transfer that good feeling...
