I don't know, but maybe it's time to move on and let this go instead of just keep banging one's head against some 3ft thick leaden wall or some such (that even if you have Superman's X-Ray vision, won't be able to see thru and find out), heh... Not like finding out will likely, meaningfully...
The studios (mostly, w/ very few exceptions) aren't by this point. They're just doing their thing(s), whatever seems fine for their bottomlines.
The point is they just don't care about the purists by this point. Paramount, for example, clearly doesn't care while Disney, well, won't even...
And of course, there are purists, and then, there are purists (as has been discussed a little bit in connection to these releases)... and not all "purists" actually agree on what's actually "pure" enough anyhow... much like in other artforms like classical music, which I previously loosely...
Actually, your argument is untrue. There are already multiple (typically slightly different) versions of many films released over the years. And I also already pointed out why there are fewer different options so far... but that might not always be so, particularly if we allow the motion...
You may disagree, but that's not how many foodies feel, LOL. Not saying it's exactly the same thing of course, but the general notion of purism/authenticity still holds. Also, cuisines and food traditions have been around far far longer than motion pictures. Give films another several...
Well, I wish JC would indeed pull a Lucas (sorta) while he's at this and give us a much better ending to The Abyss, LOL -- that ending, especially in the SE, is truly awful... and I don't just mean the crappy FX, LOL... so if we're getting an alternate, preferred SE anyway, might as well give us...
But that's the thing. Not everyone feels/believes they're "glaring issues". Plenty of people enjoy or even love their movies (just as they might love their foods and whatever else) w/ such revisions anyhow. All HT/media enthusiasts are not hardcore purists or the like... just as not all...
This reminds me of debates about food/cuisine being authentic or not, but still tasting quite good, heh. Purism/fidelity vs reimagination/reinvention. Both can be very good... but not always. I certainly do love plenty of inauthentic, "bastardized" foods, including those of my own cultural...
While I can agree w/ much of your post, this last bit hasn't been true though... or we woulda gotten the Avatar remastered-for-4K-IMAX re-release *plus* Avatar 2 in 1.43:1, hehheh...
Also, I'm not that convinced his clout was quite that big until after Titanic's record-setting BO successful as...
That all make sense to add to his preference for Super35.
And ultimately, there really wasn't much, if anything, to be gained in shooting large(r) format for what was actually intended at the time, but plenty of meaningful downsides...

Well, he may not have had quite enough clout (and corresponding budget) to do that at the time though. His budgets weren't small by True Lies, but shooting large format would presumably require substantially more, presumably including the FX and postprocessing aspect. Titanic, his next film...
It is just too bad we never got (good) BD releases of True Lies (and The Abyss) before Cameron had these latest postprocessing tech toys.
As I've said before (in at least one of these related threads), I will probably eventually (begrudgingly) buy these releases, but probably not at the current...
