    I confess I've not seen the version that is now streaming, so I can't comment on how seamless the change is/isn't. When I want to watch The French Connection, I just pull my Blu-ray copy of the unaltered version off my shelf and stick it in the player. Viva physical media!

    If the response Neil posted above from Criterion is correct and this is a "Director's Edit," we can't really be mad at Disney, as "Director's Edit" would seem to imply it was William Friedkin's decision.
