How about the silent era? From the chariot race in the 1926 version of Ben Hur to the aerial scenes in Wings, to the stunt work of Harold Lloyd, Douglas Fairbanks and Buster Keaton.
I guess I'm the only one who didn't think much of Speed. It completely jettisons its premise in the third act and all I could think of while watching it was how much better it would have been set on a train, where the characters could actually have the space to move around.
