GE sponsored the first airing in 1964, I don't know who sponsored it afterwards; my guess would be GE again until sometime in the late 60's. Rudolph aired on NBC from 1964 to 1971 and then to over to CBS in 1972 to present day.

Speak for yourself, some of us who've been watching these specials yearly since childhood aren't anywhere near what could be considered anywhere near ancient. 4K is the latest fad, so everything has to be made available in this format, whether it improves anything or not.
