This is FANTASTIC news! Thanks to all of you for finding these articles and posting them so quickly. Wow! I guess Disney believes in redemption too!
After someone suggested that Edgar Wright would a good choice for director of the final chapter of the Guardians trilogy, his response was classic:
Think it will make any difference to TPTB at Disney? You can read the entire article here:
Edgar Wright Wants James Gunn Back For Guardians Of...
Maybe so. And I truly hope that I am. My fear is that the company has had so much negative press as a result of the Gunn firing that they just decide pressing forward with a Volume 3 as Gunn had laid it out is not worth it. Especially if Dave Bautista refuses to play ball. Again, I truly hope...
At this point, I just hope that Disney allows Marvel to make Guardians 3. With everything that's happened since June, I honestly think Disney wants nothing to do with this franchise.
Thanks Jake. I just retweeted all three of your messages to TPTB at Marvel and Disney. Sure hope they at least give this idea some serious consideration. :thumbs-up-smiley:
It's just so unfortunate that this whole thing has led to this. I wish Gunn, Bautista, and the rest of the cast and crew of GOTG the best of luck in all of their future endeavors -- whatever those endeavors may be. There are absolutely no winners in any of this, just losers. :(
Yeah, I know you're right, Jake. It just seems utterly unnecessary that we're in this position. I think Disney is stepping in and causing chaos where it makes no sense for them to do so. Politics aside, don't Horn and Iger care about putting out the best possible product? Is sticking to this...
Wow. This news, while not surprising, is still disappointing. I agree that it's probably better in the long run to wait and put together the best possible product, but man. All Disney would have to do is rehire Gunn and all of this would be moot. Come on Marvel! You guys can't be okay with this...
Look, honestly I don't know what is going to happen next. I think all we can say for sure is that we're hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
This. I still think the issue is going to come up. The recent example of Solo comes to mind. Its troubled history either directly or indirectly led to a less-than-stellar box office just a few months ago. Would you want to be the director to come in and try to "fix" this mess? I love Taiki...
I don't know. The press have made such a big deal out of this that I'll bet the controversy will play a part. Maybe not as big a deal as some boycotts against Disney have been in the past, but a part nonetheless.
That's the million dollar question at this point. I'm sure they have a short list of directors in mind to take over, but honestly, I'm afraid whoever they decide on will be walking into a hornet's nest. The whole thing is just such a mess.
Can't say I'm surprised. I'm really disappointed as well. But hey, at least they're using his script. Hopefully they'll get someone to direct who won't change everything up afterwards.
I wonder when ... or if ... we'll hear anything "definitive." It's been almost a month since he got fired. Besides what Alan Horn said the day it went down, all anyone has heard since then is just "rumor."
Some of the news stories I've read over the past twenty-four hours seem to say Disney is at least entertaining the idea. What's really interesting to me is that Kevin Feige seems to be the one pushing for it.

I agree with you 100%, Sam. My preference would be to see Disney have a change of heart and let James Gunn direct the script he wrote. But if that is out of the question due to what's happened, someone else directing his script is the next best thing.
And yet he wasn't "too terrible" to do the first two films? The ones that made the Guardians of the Galaxy A-list superheroes? That guy? I mean, Disney and Marvel knew about Gunn's past before they hired him in the first place. But now he's "toxic?" I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.
