I just compared the Cohen Blu ray to the Kino dvd and the Kino has much better sound and does not have the irritating hiss that comes in when Saul enters in the Cohen version.
That's weird because Kino's version had the producer's note and they said they used the original negative. Why couldn't Cohen have put it on there anyway? This reminds me of the WEST SIDE STORY debacle where they faded out the opening overture. But what they did with this transfer is still...
Cohen deleted the PRODUCER'S NOTE at the beginning! The one that explains that this is the same Karloff that played the Frankenstein Monster. How could they do that? What happened! The picture, however, looks miraculous!
It's ironic that the problem with the sound is the only section where Saul speaks... (spooky!) (spoiler alert) It begins where we see his face for the first time until he sets fire to the curtain. And I see they cleaned up the bumpiness during the scene with the old father (who is really a...
Just watched the iTunes version and it looks like a brand-new film. The extra was supposed to be Daughter of Frankenstein but instead it was a making of version of Churchill. On the iTunes version they also deleted the beginning Producer's Note about Karloff being in this film. It's ironic...
I saw a review on Youtube from a man who could barely put two words together and he claimed they sent him a copy to review. This website gives very professional, thoughtful reviews. It doesn't make sense.
If Cohen is reading this thread: next, please give us your version of SON OF THE SHIEK and THE EAGLE with Carl Davis orchestra. You are the best game in town for these old classics.
IT'S ONLY SHOWING AT THESE PLACES:

Thank you thank! It looks amazing! I can't believe how beautiful it looks! It looks like it is a live play! How did they do this? It is a miracle. Looks like a brand-new film filmed today!
Does anyone have the list of theatres playing this on October 13th?
The Kino DVD claimed it was culled from the original negative that had shrunk and it looked very muddy -- not too different from what you see on YouTube these days. There is a Universal documentary -- which is superior and found on almost every Universal horror movie as an extra -- and in it is...
I think seeing a better transfer will enhance the performances as well as our enjoyment being able to see the detail in the creepy set. I can't wait to see (spoiler alert) the hand at the top of the stairs! And Saul's face change.
Universal is putting a lot of their classic horror on Amazon in HD for streaming, i.e. THE BLACK CAT 1934 (my favorite), and MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE 1932, both available in HD for streaming on Amazon.
I can't wait to see in HD Saul's face change to pure evil and Gloria Stuart in her white-flame dress. Bluray.com says this:
The Cohen Media Group has confirmed that it will release on Blu-ray the new 4K restoration of director James Whale's film The Old Dark House (1932), starring Boris...
