Announcing Call of Duty: WWII

The first intel drop for Call of Duty: WWII reveals details about the campaign and more.

Today, Activision and Sledgehammer Games provided the first glimpse of the title that’s taking Call of Duty back to its roots - Call of Duty: WWII. We’re talking boots- on- the- ground gameplay delivering a visceral and immersive gameplay experience unlike anything we’ve seen before.

In addition to watching the worldwide reveal stream today, we also met with Sledgehammer Games Co-Founders and Studio Heads, Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield for added insights on what’s to come in the new game. They explained to us that Call of Duty: WWII is a very personal journey for the team, as they have been hard at work on this project for the last two and a half years. “This is based on one of the most monumental moments in human history, and we get to honor and respect that global sacrifice, to honor the men and women who fought for freedom on all fronts, on a global scale,” said Condrey.

Schofield added that the team named the main character after his father, who passed away during production. “The story Call of Duty: WWII follows a global and diverse cast, but for me it honors my father Ronald “Red” Daniels and his squad, and not just what they went through from a global perspective, but what they went through personally. We like to tell a story within a story, and this is no different.”

Both Condrey and Schofield underscored the fact that Call of Duty: WWII is about a squad’s remarkable journey of personal growth and heroism across Europe in World War II, and is a story about common men and women doing uncommon things to preserve freedom.

Welcome to the Fighting First

No mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. Duty first!

Call of Duty: WWII focuses on the actions of a squad from 1944 to 1945, but will also touch on events from 1940 to 1944 to help set the stage for the narrative and establish the characters. It takes place in the European theater of conflict, at a time when the Allied forces were finally starting to gather strength on their march into Germany. You and your squad will fight your way through occupied France, Belgium, and across the Rhine into Germany.
  • Hürtgen Forest: An old-growth forest on the German border where Allied forces engage in devastating encounters. In the heat of battle, the German Army uses tree burst bombs that detonate at treetop level, showering soldiers with wooden shrapnel. When your unit is zeroed-in-on by hostile artillery, the forest explodes around you as debris rains down.
  • Normandy: From inside a Higgins landing boat, your squad will storm Omaha Beach in a visceral audiovisual experience unlike any D-Day landing experienced in a game to date. You and your fellow soldiers must overcome the enemy defenses to serve as the tip of the spear for the Allied invasion.
Multiplayer

There will be a Multiplayer reveal for Call of Duty: WWII at E3, which will take place in Los Angeles from June 13-15. You won’t want to miss it.

Multiplayer elements coming to Call of Duty: WWII include:
  • War: This narrative-driven mode brings a gripping new layer of excitement to Axis vs. Allies team play.
  • Divisions: A new approach to Create-a-Class and character customization as you enlist in a division and progress through the ranks.
  • Headquarters: A brand-new, social feature for Call of Duty, where you rally and interact with your fellow soldiers.
Call of Duty: WWII will be released on November 3, 2017. Pre-orders at participating retailers include access to the Private Beta, available first on the PlayStation4, scheduled for later this year.

Getting back to their roots. The only campaign I ever finish are the WW 2 COD's, as in COD 2, 3, and World At War. I'm excited about this announcement.

Too bad they mishandled their Call of Duty 4 remaster so badly, since this would've been the perfect chance to finally bring Call of Duty: United Offensive to consoles.

An Introduction to the Divisions in Call of Duty: WWII
Airborne, Mountain, Infantry, Armored, Expeditionary: Which one will you enlist in?

New to Call of Duty: WWII, Divisions fundamentally redefine how players invest in their Multiplayer career. This streamlined approach to Multiplayer gives players the ability to reinforce their individual play styles while dominating the enemy in some of the most iconic locations of the world’s largest conflict.

Visitors to the Activision booth were treated to recruitment videos explaining each of the five different divisions in the game, and you can experience those as well, right here.
  • AIRBORNE DIVISION: The first to the fight, the Airborne Division moves fast and stays quiet, armed with undetectable silenced SMGs.

Road to Beta - Call of Duty: WWII

August 14, 2017

We’re thrilled to finally share the Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta with you beginning August 25th on PS4. While this Beta is only a small part of the feature-rich Multiplayer experience coming in November, it is a critical test of our core gameplay, our game systems, as well as a stress test of our online infrastructure at scale.

We love the active dialog we have with the Call of Duty community, and value the exchange of ideas and constructive feedback we have with fans. Your feedback will help us finalize features, optimize gameplay balance, and refine the remaining development roadmap to launch. So please explore, rank up, and have fun. Share as much feedback as you can – everything helps. The development team will be playing non-stop, and we’ll be monitoring performance and collecting valuable data around the clock.

As you can imagine, we receive a lot of feedback internally from the development team playing the game, but it’s a different experience when fans around the world play together for the first time. Two of our biggest announcements at E3, Divisions and War Mode, will be live for the first time and we look forward to sharing them with you during the Private Multiplayer Beta.

First, Divisions replaces the Pick 10 Create-a-Class system, and delivers the fantasy of enlisting in one of five iconic fighting groups in the world’s most brutal conflict. This test of the Private Multiplayer Beta will feature an introduction to a portion of the player’s soldier progression and the underlying foundation of Divisions, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. The final design of this new feature will continue to be fine-tuned as development continues from now through launch.

Also, we’re excited to hear from you after you’ve played Operation Breakout, our first War Mode experience. War, developed in partnership with our friends at Raven Software, is a new way to play Call of Duty Multiplayer in an immersive Allied vs. Axis fight across the war-torn village of St. Lo, France.

Here’s an overview on what you should expect in the Private Multiplayer Beta:

  • Maps – At least three Multiplayer maps, including: Pointe Du Hoc, Ardennes, and Gibraltar.
  • War Mode – Operation Breakout
  • Modes – Fan-favorite modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint.
  • Divisions – Enlist in the Infantry, Expeditionary, Airborne, Armored, or Mountain Division. You are not limited to any one Division, and we encourage you to try them all!
  • Progression – Players will begin at Soldier Rank 1 and rank up through a limited progression to unlock weapons, scorestreaks, equipment, and Basic Training Skills.

Here’s what you should not expect in the Private Multiplayer Beta:

  • Headquarters – We’re testing the match-making of this all-new social experience, but access to this space will not be active during the Multiplayer Beta.
  • Supply Drops, and Loot – These customization features that add depth and personality to your soldier will not be included in the Multiplayer Beta.
  • Esports – Ranked Play, Game Battles, and our suite of competitive features will be accessible when we release in November.
  • Additional content not in the Private Multiplayer Beta includes: full progression, remaining maps and modes, additional War Mode maps, and the full armory of weapons, scorestreaks, Basic Training, and equipment.

We’re also pleased to announce that we’ll be unpacking the Private Multiplayer Beta content and dropping more intel in our Call of Duty: WWII livestream from Cologne, Germany at GamesCom 2017 on August 22nd at 10AM PT time. Look for more information over the coming days, including tune in information from the SHG and COD social accounts!

Look for more information in the days to come, and follow us on Twitter to get the latest updates. We’ll be regularly checking in with the community during the Multiplayer Beta and providing updates via our social channels. Also, we’re creating a dedicated studio Reddit thread using our u/SHG_Hammer account on the r/WWII subreddit where we can track and respond to your feedback as it comes in. Look for more information in our next Private Multiplayer Beta update. We’ll see you online!

FULL DISCLAIMER: It’s possible that you may encounter a few hiccups here or there during this testing window. Please be patient, as we’ll be actively making changes in the backend to address issues in real time.

Pointe du Hoc: Fight through a fortified network of German bunker complexes atop the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, an important strategic target overlooking the beaches of Normandy. WAR MODE

Additionally, players will be able to take part in Call of Duty: WWII’s War Mode. This is an all-new game mode where players must work as a team to defeat the enemy. Allied and Axis forces clash in team-driven assault and defend missions for key strategic objectives.

  • Fight for control of a war-torn French village west of St. Lo, an important operation in the Allied push onward and out of the beachhead at Normandy. Allied and Axis forces clash for control of a strategic manor to secure a forward operating position. Bridge construction, ammo depot demolition and tank escorts are key strategic tasks in this do or die mission to dominate the enemy. Choose your equipment wisely – every decision can mean the difference between victory and defeat in this narrative-driven, objective-based multiplayer experience – a first for Call of Duty.
WAR MODE BRIEFING [BETA UPDATE]: TRAILER

It should be clear by now that this Private Multiplayer Beta is busting at the seams. Be sure to follow Sledgehammer Games on Twitter for the latest updates, and you can leave feedback for the team there, or on the r/WWII subreddit. Every bit of information helps! It’s two days until the Private Multiplayer Beta begins on PS4, and we look forward to joining you on the field of battle.

Played several games of the beta last night. First impression - so far, so good. The three maps included in the beta are fairly tight, so I mostly ran SMG-type guns.

The Private Multiplayer Beta is an important stress test of game systems at scale and serves as a critical development function offering real-time analytics and feedback prior to the final game release worldwide on November 3.

"Bringing Call of Duty: WWII to life has been a tremendous honor, and we can't wait for fans to help test it beginning today with the Private Multiplayer Beta. This Beta is an incredible opportunity for us to hear from fans about their experiences and work together with the community to fine-tune and polish the game for its release this November," said Michael Condrey, studio head and co-founder of Sledgehammer Games.

Added Glen Schofield, studio head and co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, "while this is just a slice of the full experience, we want players to dig in and have fun. We'll pour over every bit of feedback across the maps and modes, as well as all-new features like Divisions and War Mode that will be in the test. We hope fans enjoy playing the game as much as we have enjoyed making it for them."

The Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta delivers a small slice of the full multiplayer experience for players to partake in, including Divisions, a reimagining of the create-a-class system. Divisions give players the ability to reinforce their individual play styles by choosing from five iconic World War II divisions, each with specific division training and division weapon skills. While the final design of Divisions is still in-progress, the Private Multiplayer Beta test will provide players an introduction to five in-game Divisions.

Across both testing weekends, players in the Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta will have access to multiple multiplayer maps set against the backdrop of the greatest conflict in history, designed for the fast-paced, grounded multiplayer battles Call of Duty fans know and love. In addition, players will test War Mode, the all-new team-driven assault and defend game mode, developed in partnership with Raven Software. Additional multiplayer content coming this November in the final product, including Headquarters, the esports suite of features and functionality, Supply Drops and Loot as well as more maps and game modes are not available in the Private Multiplayer Beta.

Fans will have another opportunity to join the Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta during its second weekend of testing as it opens up to players that have pre-ordered Call of Duty: WWII at participating retailers on either PS4™ or Xbox One. The second Private Multiplayer Beta weekend begins on Friday, September 1, and runs through Monday, September 4. Players who participate in the Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta during either weekend will receive the exclusive Private Multiplayer Beta Combat Pack for use in Multiplayer, including a unique helmet, calling card and emblem. All of the latest Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta intel can be found at https://www.callofduty.com/wwii/beta.

During the course of both Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta weekends, Sledgehammer Games will be gathering player feedback to help finalize features, optimize gameplay balance and refine remaining development leading into launch this November. Private Multiplayer Beta participants will have the opportunity to share their feedback and join in an active dialog with the development team across a variety of outlets, including player surveys and online forums, with Private Multiplayer Beta update blog posts planned from Sledgehammer Games.

Call of Duty: WWII, launching worldwide on November 3, marks a monumental return to the greatest military conflict in history for Call of Duty®. Players will be immersed in combat across three robust game modes; Campaign, Multiplayer and Nazi Zombies. The Campaign mode transports players to the European theater as they engage in an all-new story set in iconic World War II locations. Multiplayer marks an exciting return to the roots and combat that defined the franchise, offering fast-paced, grounded action with an iconic arsenal of weapons and equipment. Nazi Zombies is an original, terrifying co-operative mode that unleashes a frightening new horror story as a dark and sinister plot unfolds to unleash an invincible army of the dead.

Call of Duty: WWII is published by Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI), and developed by Sledgehammer Games with additional development support from Raven Software. Does this have a decent single player campaign mode or is it just MMO? Is it the typical led-by-the-nose frontal assault style that seems to be a hallmark of COD games?

No reviews yet, but I'd imagine its more or less the same as every Call of Duty. There's a very straightforward and bombastic single player mode that lasts for about 5-7 hours along with a multiplayer mode that is nearly identical to every other CoD except for one unique twist that players will immediately hate by shouting "MW2 was the best."

After surviving the beaches of Normandy, Red and his squad will fight their way across Europe, engaging the enemy in iconic battle locations such as the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, as they make their way into Germany.

  • PRIVATE RONALD “RED” DANIELS - From rural farm life to hardened soldier, be prepared to sacrifice everything as Private Ronald "Red" Daniels.
  • PRIVATE ROBERT ZUSSMAN - You can always count on him when things get grim. Meet Private Robert Zussman, Red's best friend in the squad.
  • SERGEANT PIERSON - He's strict and does everything by the book. Stay on Sergeant Pierson's good side, or you'll be sorry.
  • LIEUTENANT TURNER - His years of military experience and compassionate leadership will help keep his men alive. Meet Lieutenant Joseph Turner, your commanding officer.
MEET THE ALLIES:
  • ROUSSEAU - A highly skilled French Resistance fighter, Rousseau will do whatever it takes to fight off the Axis powers in France and avenge the ones she's lost.
  • MAJOR ARTHUR CROWLEY - After years of fighting in the British Expeditionary Force, Major Arthur Crowley serves as a part of the Special Operations Executive, where he executes covert missions behind enemy lines.
“BROTHERHOOD OF HEROES” DOCUMENTARY
Call of Duty: WWII will take players to the front lines of war-torn Western Europe during one of history’s greatest conflicts, where the stakes were high and the only thing standing in the way of Nazi oppression was a generation of ordinary men and women willing to make extraordinary sacrifices to preserve our way of life.

Get a peek at how Sledgehammer Games pays homage to the men and women who answered history’s call through a gripping Campaign Mode that aims to redefine World War II for a new generation of gamers.
