I don't believe it! Warner Archive release Lana Turner on Blu-ray disc! Obviously only because she's chaperoned by the Duke. Being a Lana fan, I'm buying.

Sweet! What with Peyton Place, Imitation Of Life, Madame X and Rains Of Ranchipur my Lana Turner blu ray collection is coming along nicely. Now if only the Warner Archives would release The Bad And The Beautiful and the 1948 Three Musketeers from the vaults!

This was a 4-track stereo release. Warner should still hold the discrete stereo master which the 2-track was made from.

Normally I'd cry foul, but Warner is very good about using the correct elements in that if they have them they use them. This and Blood Alley have only ever been available in 2 channel on DVD, so no one can claim that the discrete tracks still exist.

I stand to be corrected but didn't Jack Warner order most of the stereo tracks from that era dumped or destroyed?
I've never heard that. What I have heard is that MGM didn't want to store their multi-angle original music recording sessions anymore so they had them all transferred to tape and then dumped the optical film recordings.

That was the stereo music tracks, which is why we haven't had any Warner fifties stereo soundtracks released, unlike the great stuff we've had from MGM & Fox.

Essentially that is correct, although they were not dumped, but erased to be reused for their TV product. Not only the 3 track music masters, but the 4 track master mag for transfer to 35mm mag stripped film. BUT, most of their 50s stereo soundtracks were collected and saved from 35mm prints still around. So, I would assume those prints were original 4 track.

The story goes that copies of 4-track stereo prints of some 50's Warner titles ended up at the Library of Congress at the time of release. That is how we were able to get "Rebel" and "Eden" in 4-track.
A 2-track stereo mix-down (Sea Chase) was made for the laserdisc ( and VHS??)from the 4-track in the 90's, well after Jack made that terrible decision!, and just before Digital multi-channel technology.
If they don't think the film is that marketable, unlike the Dean films, the 2-track is good enough.
Were "The Sea Chase" and "Blood Alley" a big seller on home video for a Wayne film, I doubt it.
I don't think Warner want to go back and re-master all their stereo 2-track titles that are not already archived in their original discrete format.

Lucky Me and Battle Cry are both 5.1 on DVD. I know the WB website says Lucky Me is mono, but I would assume the "Archive edition" is identical to the earlier release and that is a misprint.

Also there is no Blu-ray of The Spirit of St Louis.

Sorry, my error, SPIRIT was a broadcast in HD and discrete stereo I recorded a few years ago.
I will update the list and thanks for the corrections.
