When they say "4k Scan" of title X, does this mean that, simply, they've scanned the negative (or best available source material) and that's it, or has some sort of restoration been done too?

Do they remove all the dirt, debris, detritus, etc, and color correct too? or, like I said, is it just a scan?

It has the same validity as "digitally remastered" ie none. There is no benchmark of quality, guarantee of source, or affirmation that any additional works have been done beyond scanning in 4K whatever they chose to scan.

Having said that the costs to do a 4K scan are greater than 2K, so you would assume if they were going to do it, there would be a technical and quality reason to do so, beyond the advertising hook possibilities.

A 4k scan may be the beginning of something special, with a myriad of caveats.

It all begins with two points.

The quality of the scan

The quality and proper selection of the element scanned

From there, everything can be turned to gold...

Or tin.

4k is only as good as what you put into it. Film is, as it always has been, a developing technology. Older films were often at the mercy of the production methods of the time (not to mention crude archiving). You simply can't expect a magic button like UHD to come along and make everything look like it was shot last week. If the film looks like Robert Altman made it (ie: through a wet sock) it's going to look just as wet socky but now in 4k!

Really it's no different than 3D or any other gimmick that came and went in the past decade. Something that sounds cool on paper but is ultimately harder to swallow in the execution. So basically I can't help but groan when so and so screams "CANDIDATE FOR UHD!!!!1" for a film whose intended look makes it an easy target for instant disappointment over a perceived "uprezzed dvd" (I'm looking at you Close Encounters!)
