With The Virgin Spring, his status as a master filmmaker and a key figure in world cinema was further cemented with this simple yet potent retelling of a 13th Century medieval ballad of the brutal rape and murder of a farmer’s daughter and the vengeance sought upon her killers. Criterion has revisited the movie for a Blu-ray upgrade.

It sounds like this Bergman guy ripped off Wes Craven & The Last House On The Left.

Actually, it was probably the other way around. While I don't have any concrete evidence of proof, it's certainly not unheard of that Wes Craven may have been inspired by the movie.

Of all the achievements Bergman gets, unintentionally inventing the slasher film is got to be high up on the list.
