Well... it's not exactly a "space" movie. Most of it takes place on the ground. To say more would give away a key plot point.

That was quite a bit of the draw during its original release. The Space Race was in full gear and many kids were absolutely enamored with anything space. It also premiered 2 days before the fire on Apollo 1. That caused a bit of concern on Universal's part being released so close to that tragedy but kids didn't care and went to see it anyway.
