Hey all, I literally just signed up here. I love forums.

As of this month, I have my first man cave and I'm looking for a low cost home theater surround sound system. It's just a bedroom so I don't need insane quality, just regular movies/music stuff. I don't know a ton about these, but in our living room I have a Samsung HT-E5500W. It works great, I don't ever have it at full volume and it plays DVDs/has radio, etc. I bought it used a few years back.

Anyway, now (obviously) I need a system for the man cave. I found another Samsung HT-E5500W, however Frys actually has an LG system for around the same price and I'd love if you experts can help guide me between these two:

Samsung HT-E5500W - $250 ish

^ that link has the stats, I don't know if watts is all that matters but it has 1k watts.

---OR---

LG BH9230BW - $270

^ the sale

Or of course if you know of another model that's even better for a somewhat similar price please school me.

Thanks!

Spec-wise they are very similar products. If either of them has a feature that you particularly like, go with that one. If it were me I'd probably go with the LG, but no real reason other that the specs are ever so slightly better (not that the difference mans anything) and I don;t particularly like Samsung.

Keep in mind that they are not standard receivers, they are low-end home-theater-in-box models with low-ohm proprietary connections; so if anything breaks you're throwing away the entire thing. That said, they're better than an entry level sound bar, so if it works for you, great.

No. It doesn't. A perfect example of how absurd and useless specs on this type of gear is. Maybe 100 watts, but without any info on the efficiency of the speakers, etc. that info doesn't mean anything. My point is, don't be swayed by absurd claims like that.
