Oh I'm a big fan of this! Must have seen this a dozen times when it came out over 30 years ago - I had the infamous Lisa Bonet Interview poster tacked onto my bedroom wall. My previous blu-ray is the UK 2009 disc, which looks completely rubbish projected. Looks like there'll be another Halloween 4K triple bill again with The Shining, Don't Look Now and Angel Heart!

I'm looking forward to this as well. I hope SC does a great compression job unlike most of their output.
Yes - they are a bit hit-and miss (Terminator 2 was probably the nadir but the DNR was James Cameron's fault). Don't Look Now looks nice projected from the 4K disc. The previous Angel Heart blu-ray is so horrible, I think anything would be an improvement though.

I actually preferred the remastered blu-ray, compared to the 4K disc. Projected, the 4K disc is way too dark. Oddly, the colour grading is different between the blu-ray and 4K disc, much like it is on Unforgiven. The flesh tones seem unnaturally pink on the blu-ray.

In my opinion, there's no real resolution benefit of the 4K disc, even with a third of the bitrate, the uprezzed blu-ray looks really filimic, with natural grain. It was great watching this again - looking forward to more catalogue 4K releases! There's also a really good booklet written by Alan Parker included, detailing the production. The extras on the discs are just the old DVD extras ported over, as well as the commentary.

Thanks for letting us know about this, and reminding me it's available. I managed a theater in NYC where this premiered ( got to escort Ms. Bonet to her seat and she was very cordial) and I recall the wet gate print we showed (supervised by Mr. Parker) was so dark during certain scenes you couldn't make out people's faces, and had to go by the voices who was who. Also, I remember the color was pushed to the yellow side of the spectrum (which I'm assuming was on purpose, especially noticeable during the intimate scene between Ms. Bonet and Mr. Roarke.)

Anyway, I love this film, both in spite of and because of its eccentricities. If anyone who is a fan of this film hasn't yet read the original source novel--"Falling Angel" by William Hjortsberg--I highly recommend it.

The amazon.co.uk web site lists this as region B2. I assume that's correct? I don't have a region-free player, so I can only hope we'll see a North American edition.

Yes - the blu-ray is region 'B'-locked. It's very rare that Studiocanal licenses their masters to North America but they did so for Apocalypse Now.

Projected, the 4K disc is so dark, you can only see the silhouette of Mickey Rourke against the window in his office in the opening scenes. In the booklet, Alan Parker writes how they drained everything of all primary colours for a monochromatic look. "Rather sarcastically, (producer) Alan Marshall reminded us of the perversity of huge numbers of painters required to paint the colour out of the film. For in film art direction it does, of course, take six layers of paint to make something look unpainted."

On Caps-a-holic the differences in colour grading that I'm seeing on the blu ray and 4K discs are quite apparent. The 4K disc must be more to the intended look - just a shame I can't see very much!

(and they've included a rather nice still of Lisa Bonet in a damp singlet)

.

Yeah. I remember that scene being really dark, but possibly not as dark as you describe

As a longtime lover this movie, I went ahead and ordered the UHD from Amazon Uk. I hesitated after reading some of the above posts, but overall I'm very pleased. It's a touch dark at times, but much of the film was shot that way, and I greatly prefer this darker tone to the possibility of a too bright result from heavy handed HDR, especially for this particular title. Too bright would have been a disaster. Blacks are beautifully rendered, and the color grading seems just right. Resolution is excellent, with beautifully rendered detail. I'd say it's easily 4 out of 5, or perhaps 4.5 on the grading scale. I don't yet own a universal player, so the Blu isn't useable at this point.

Viewing was via an OPPO UDP-205, and an LG 65" OLED 4K display.
