Fans of William Cameron Menzies' recently restored 3D movie "The Maze" might like to take a look at this, shown on the UK Talking Pictures TV channel.
Hitherto I've not been very impressed by the 2D to 3D feature on my TV but it did a decent job with this movie.
WCM's deep focus, multi-layered, chiaroscuro style is well served by the fake 3D: lots of long corridors, wrought iron work, archways and every prop imaginable for the actors to hide behind, peer over or look through.
The movie is a grim anti-Nazi tale with some hard-hitting scenes. The attack on a Jewish actress during her performance and her subsequent murder is brutal in the extreme.
Rudolph Mate's beautiful monochrome photography and WCM's dimensional direction are a match made in Heaven.
If it's showing on TV anywhere near you please take a look.
