I know hockey isn't very popular on this board, but this is an incredible story. In last night's Carolina Hurricanes versus Toronto Maple Leafs game in Toronto, both Canes goalies were injured during the game. Since Carolina was the road team, they had to resort to dressing Toronto's emergency goalie -- 42 year old David Ayres, a former junior B goalie and current Zamboni driver, who had not played in 5 years. The score was 3-1 Carolina in the 2nd period at the time Ayres went into the game.

Ayres let in two quick goals. One of the Canes players came over to him and said "just have fun out here. We don't care if you let in 10 goals". That seemed to calm him down, and Carolina went on to win the game 6-3. Ayres was named first star of the game -- a dream come true for anyone who played sports in their youth.

Nice story. Seems to be the Maple Leafs in a nutshell- their designated players can’t win for their own team! :P

That it happened against the Leafs made it extra sweet. Their fans are livid today -- rightfully so -- over the team's lack of effort in the third period. Toronto is battling for a playoff spot, and should have smelled blood in the water when Ayres went in the game. Instead, the Leafs played like a high school team getting ready for spring break.

The Leafs are still the top story in Toronto, right?
Even though they haven’t sniffed a cup in more than 50 years, the fans there are still passionate about them.
