LG debuts $299 smart display speaker with Meridian Audio

LG has launched an AI Smart Display with the Google Assistant combined with audio provided by Meridian. The LG XBOOM AI ThinQ model WK9 is available at U.S. retailers at a suggested price of $299,  although an introductory Black Friday price of $199 (if you missed it), might still be available if you hunt around.

The WK9 includes Google Assistant functionality and a touch-screen display. Furthermore, LG has leveraged its partnership with Meridian to promote the unit’s audio credentials and to deliver what the company describes as “precise vocal definition and accurate bass” from this comparatively small unit. With Meridian’s extraordinary legacy, one would be hard-pushed to doubt that assertion.

“Our collaborations with valued partners including Google and Meridian have enabled us to offer a new home entertainment device with all of the smart capabilities that come with the Google Assistant plus an elevated audio experience,” said Tim Alessi, head of product marketing at LG Electronics USA. “The LG XBOOM WK9 Smart Display offers a great package of features to those who don’t want to sacrifice audio or video quality in a smart home device.”

The unit includes a video conferencing camera and two 20W speakers tuned by Meridian Audio. As well as using the WK9 as a tool for on-the go entertainment and YouTube videos, its 8-inch display is primed for Google Maps, photos apps or Skype-type communications. The WK9 enables control of other LG ThinQ products in the home such as LG TVs and home appliances, as well as the estimated 10,000+ smart devices that currently support Google Assistant.
