TiVo launches TiVo+ and 4K TiVo EDGE

TiVo has announced its new video network TiVo+ and its “most advanced device ever” TiVo EDGE (available now), and which will include 4K UHD, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities.

The company says that TiVo+ should be paired with the TiVo EDGE all-in-one media device, designed to work with HD antenna or digital cable. It comes in two variations: TiVo EDGE for cable and TiVo EDGE for antenna. The system allows access to live, recorded, and streaming TV from the one device, while both products include Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR.

EDGE incorporates SkipMode to get directly to the end of a commercial break, OneSearch for simultaneously searching live TV, DVR recordings and streaming apps, and OnePass, for identifying seasons and episodes of a particular show, and automatically recording current and upcoming episodes for ordering into a playlist.

TiVo EDGE for antenna is promoted as a cost-effective alternative to cable TV for cord-cutters, and the model includes a 2TB hard drive (up to 300 HD hours), and four tuners. TiVo EDGE for cable is a service spanning cable and online TV programming, including streaming services. The cable model has a two 2TB hard drive, but with six tuners.

“Today people face confusion and overwhelming choice when it comes to home entertainment – US households have an average of 7.2 entertainment subscriptions, and that’s growing all the time,” said Dave Shull, president and CEO, TiVo. “Everyone at TiVo is passionate about helping viewers make sense of that sea of options by bringing all their entertainment together in one place. TiVo+ and TiVo EDGE will make it easier for viewers to find and enjoy watching what they love across live TV, DVR and online streaming services.”

TiVo+, meanwhile, will appear in the coming weeks and enables live streaming of channels and “thousands” of movies and TV shows in an app-free environment, and supports multiple services and entertainment options alongside TV and subscription services. The company has also partnered with XUMO and other publishers to make a host of channels available at launch, and TiVo provides voice powered remotes for quick access.

TiVo EDGE for antenna is priced at $349.99 and requires a service plan of $6.99 monthly, $69.99 annually or a one-time All-In-Plan for $249.99. TiVo EDGE for cable is available for $399.99 and requires a service plan of $14.99 monthly, $149.99 annually or a one-time All-In-Plan for $549.99.

We are a gnats whisker away from cancelling DTV after being a customer for about 20 years. Prices are way too high and I’ve considering others options, most likely Xfnity. With a 2 year agreement I will pay less for cable and broadband then I do for DTV only. The broadband will be 100mbps vs the 24 I’m getting now.

Is the Edge shipping now? It also seems like the cable version and OTA version only do cable or OTA, which means you’d better know what you want when you but it. Is that correct, no box to do both?

We’ve been with DTV so long, we first had a TiVo and bought the lifetime service contract for it. It shows on our bill. Our hope we can get the transferred to a new TiVo.
