I've always loved the theatrical presentations of Hair.
The 1979 film, not so much.
Of course, it's a filmed record, less or more, of the musical play, but seemingly shorn of spirit. And possibly that spirit had more to do with the the time in which it arrived - off-Broadway in 1967, moving...
My initial thought regarding Shout Factory's new Anne Bancroft Collection was "why?"
Over the decades Ms Bancroft appeared in over fifty films.
This is a pleasant, but incomplete survey of her career, and there's very little new.
Here's the breakdown.
Eight films.
Don't Bother to Knock -...

I have some extra discs that I'm looking to sell. All are in like new condition and watched only once (unless noted as sealed, in which case it's brand new). I'm asking $12 for each disc individually, or 2 for $20, or 3 for $25. Prices include shipping within the US, if you're outside the US...
Don Siegel's quintessential sci-fi classic, the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, is one of those films that once viewed, will not be forgotten.
With ties to the real world, and politics galore, it's up there with the sci-fi greats.
Unfortunately, it was created during an unfortunate era in...

John Avildsen's Joe, released in 1970, and giving a start to a young Susan Sarandon, is a very low-budget production, about a couple of dudes with a grudge against drug-using hippies.
Mr. Avildsen, probably best known for Rocky, also acted as cinematographer.
The image on Olive's disc is...

Elaine May's 1971 production, A New Leaf, is one of the era's funniest films.
Like Unknown Woman, best not to discuss content, as there are riches here to be discovered.
And also like Unknown Woman, it comes from Olive's Signature collection, proving the point, at least to me, that their...
Max Ophuls is one of those filmmakers, whose style is generally, instantly recognizable.
His use of extraordinarily fluid camera movements, and stylized lighting set him apart from the pack.
Should there be readers of this site unfamiliar with his work, grab copies of The Earrings of Madame...
Nicholas Hytner's initial film as director, The Madness of King George, was a 1994 Goldwyn release, and typical of some of their product, is a superior production.
A bit of a political thriller, combined with an interesting character study of the aging King George III, who by the 1780s had...
The other Olive release as licensed by Paramount, is another fun Cary Grant film. This one released in 1959, and directed by Blake Edwards, has Mr. Grant is teamed with Tony Curtis.
The film was shot by Russell Harlan, who had become an Edwards staple. Most will know his name from his work...
Fans of Cary Grant can finally own his penultimate film appearance on Blu-ray, courtesy of Olive Films via Paramount.
A delightful romp, with Mr. Grant and Leslie Caron, the 1964 production, comes across as a bit more than adequate on Blu-ray, with color not always tracking, and far too much...
