The Watchers on June 7 appears to be the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan (daughter of M. Night). I think she was an AD on MNS' Old.

Not a whole lot on that list that gets me too excited, though I don't yet know much about most of them. Early year releases The Beekeeper and Argylle look fun.

At the beginning of the 2023 thread, I said that Dune: Part Two was my most anticipated film of the year.

I guess Dune: Part Two is still my most anticipated film of the year for 2024 too because we didn't actually get to see it in 2023.

What about you?

As a child of the 80's, most anticipated is probably Beetlejuice 2. I love creature features so maybe also Wolf Man and Godzilla x Kong (though I still haven't yet watched Godzilla vs Kong).

The Incredibles
This is inaccurate. Disney has not announced an Incredibles film for Thanksgiving. They do have the date on hold for an untitled Disney film, but there is no way it is Incredibles. Brad Bird is currently working on Ray Gunn for Skydance Animation, where John Lasseter is running things now after Disney fired him.

I would take every movie release date on that list with a grain of salt.

"Joker 2" is probably the most interesting 2024 flick, partly because the 1st was good and also because I luvs me some Gaga.

"Inside Out 2" should be anticipated by me, but Pixar's been in such a rut that I'm less than optimistic.

Otherwise, I see a bunch of "oh, that could be good" movies but nothing anticipated by me.

Dune 2, Joker 2 promises to be interesting of nothing else. Furiosa also sounds interesting. Or that I’m wanting a half asses Marvel movie (a good one would be fine) but I had hoped that the next Captain America might come out. With it being moved to next year….thats a bit disappointing. The rest could be good, could be bad

Looks like "Wonka" is officially profitable, as it's at $465m WW with a $125m budget.

Good! I like the movie and think it deserves its success.

"Color Purple" seems to be sinking like a stone. I know it's not opened internationally yet but with a $100m budget and $54m in the US, it feels like there's little chance it'll turn a profit.

Guess it needs to hope for some Oscar love.

I haven’t seen Color Purple yet so I can’t really comment on it except to say that it doesn’t seem like there’s any earthly reason for it to have been made with a $100 million budget. That means it needs about $300 million to break even, more if they spend lavishly campaigning for awards season. Hollywood somehow needs to remember how to make the kind of mid-budget films that used to be their bread and butter. It seems like every film that makes it to a multiplex these days costs $100 million and that’s just insane.

The Color Purple had the best opening for any film released on Christmas Day since Sherlock Holmes in 2009. That is really impressive. But I think what happened there is that the audience who really wanted to see it rushed out quickly, and it isn't expanding its audience beyond the core fan base for that material. I was very much looking forward to it and had planned to go on opening day but got sick with the flu. When I was finally well enough to go see it earlier this week, there were less than ten other people in the auditorium with me.

I'd love to be wrong about this because I think the movie is really good. But I'm not sure how much of an "Oscar bump" this particular movie would have. Alice Walker's novel and Steven Spielberg's original film are already widely known quantities for the general public. The stage musical has had two major Broadway productions since its debut in 2005, plus multiple national tours and subsequent regional productions. How many people who weren't already planning to see this version will change their mind and do so if it receives Oscar nominations? It's not like this is some small indie film that people haven't heard of which will get a wider release after receiving awards attention.

The 1985 film was made for about $15 million, which is roughly $40 million today, adjusted for inflation.

To be completely fair, the 1985 film didn't have to stage huge musical numbers in the way that this version does. I'm sure that added to the cost. So it is not an exact 1-to-1 comparison because the needs of the musical are different.

That being said, both your point and Josh's absolutely stand.

I don't think TCP is going to get much Oscar love. It was only nominated for two GG's and lost both of those. And Taraji P. Henson seems to be in the press this weekend, bitter about various aspects of the production.
